POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
- This position is full-time, Monday through Friday, first shift, 37.5 hours a week, 7:00AM to 3:00PM with a half hour unpaid lunch break.
- As Mail Handler, you will inspect inmate mail and parcels for contraband and generate rejection notifications.
- You will also communicate with inmates about their mail, books, newspapers and parcels as well as communicate with inmate's family members about mail, books, etc.
- In this position you will also maintain legal logs, parcel logs, and other records as necessary.
Note: Much of the work involved is physical in nature and requires standing, lifting, bending and carrying items that may weigh up to 50 lbs. Therefore, incumbents in this class must have and maintain adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, visual and auditory acuity to be able to perform the required duties. Due to the nature of this position, incumbents must also possess a CT Driver's License.

The Connecticut Department of Correction (DOC) is the agency responsible for corrections in the U.S. State of Connecticut. The agency operates 13 correctional facilities. It has its headquarters in Wethersfield. The DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, human, and provide re-entry programming.
The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is a unified system; all sentenced and un-sentenced offenders are supervised by the DOC. The Department also provides supervision for offenders on parole, community release, and other discretionary release programs.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
- Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail;
- Operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales;
- Weighs and stamps postaged, franked, or metered mail;
- Drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail;
- Picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices;
- Signs for insured, certified, registered, and special delivery mail;
- Updates and maintains records;
- Schedules vehicle maintenance;
- Provides postal service assistance to customers;
- May maintain daily cash records;
- Performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
- Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates, and classes of mail;

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working with Quadient or Pitney Bowes mail equipment;
- Experience using Microsoft 365 applications (Word, Outlook, Excel, etc.); and
- Experience working with PeopleSoft or other similar software.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
