DISCOVER THE OPPORTUNITY TO
  • Sort, distribute, and route incoming and interoffice mail;
  • Pick up and deliver mail using a state vehicle; 
  • Operate mail equipment, including postage meters, inserters, and weight scales;
  • Weigh, stamp, and prepare outgoing mail, including metered, insured, certified, and registered items.
  • Maintain delivery and postage records;
  • Provide postal service assistance to customers and internal teams.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Sorts, distributes, and routes incoming and interoffice mail; 
  • Operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; 
  • Weighs and stamps postaged, franked, or metered mail; 
  • Drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; 
  • Picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; 
  • Signs for insured, certified, registered, and special delivery mail; 
  • Updates and maintains records; 
  • Schedules vehicle maintenance; 
  • Provides postal service assistance to customers; 
  • May maintain daily cash records; 
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates, and classes of mail; 
  • Skills
    • oral and written communication skills; 
    • interpersonal skills; 
  • Ability to
    • follow oral and written instructions; 
    • perform basic arithmetic computations; 
    • utilize computer software; 
    • operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; 
  • Mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating automated mail equipment such as postage meters, mail inserters, or folding machines.
  • Experience using barcode scanners and mail-tracking software to log, track, and verify incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Experience providing responsive customer service, including experience explaining procedures, speaking clearly, or resolving mail-related issues.
  • Experience collaborating in a team setting to complete shared operational tasks such as daily mail routes, sorting assignments, or bulk mailing projects.
  • Experience with Microsoft Outlook, Word, and Excel to send and respond to emails, draft documents, and log information in spreadsheets.
  • Experience reading and processing written materials in the English language such as deciphering hand-written addresses and matching mail to recipient directories.
  • Experience prioritizing tasks and meeting deadlines in a fast-paced or time-sensitive work environment.
  • Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator’s license with no limitations for operating a motor vehicle.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
