ABOUT THE ROLE:
The role of a maintainer at Western Connecticut State University includes a wide range of tasks to ensure the smooth operation and maintenance of the campus facilities. The candidate selected for this position will be tasked with various duties, including but not limited to, snow removal during winter months to ensure safe passage for students, faculty, and visitors. This responsibility is crucial, especially on the Midtown and Westside Campuses, where weather conditions can significantly impact daily activities. The maintainer's role is integral to the university's commitment to providing a safe and functional academic environment. Candidates must be prepared to work in various conditions.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:
The Environmental & Facilities Custodial Services Department oversees the Facilities Operations areas of the University. The department provides budget support and reconciliation of operation and expense accounts, and capital fund accounts.
NOTE: Eligible candidates in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license. A medical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check will be required prior to offer of employment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for performing basic tasks of an unskilled nature (e.g. requiring little prior experience or training; most tasks can be learned quickly on the job) in one or several of the following areas:
- Building and equipment maintenance (operational and remedial);
- Grounds care;
- Food services;
- Operation of trucks of less than five (5) ton capacity;
- Parking garage.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to applicants who can demonstrate in their application:
1) Prior custodial experience.
2) Commercial /Industrial cleaning experience.
3) Experience working in a large facility/multiple buildings.
4) Experience operating, caring for & performing minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work.
5) Ability to perform simple record keeping.
6) Must possess the ability to install bulletin boards, pictures, shelving, as well as move furniture.
7) Experience with snow removal.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
- Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
- A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
- Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
- Incumbents in this class may be required to complete an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
