We are recruiting for a full-time Supervising Custodian to support the University's Environmental & Facilities Custodial Services department located on the Midtown Campus at 181 White Street, Danbury, CT.  Western has another campus located on Lake Avenue, Danbury, CT.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Energetic, fast-paced environment

  • Monday - Friday, 4:00pm - 12:00 midnight
  • Eligible candidates in this class must process and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license
  • Must be available for emergencies and scheduled overtime.  
  • May be exposed to extreme weather

SOME DUTIES INCLUDE:

  • Supervising evening custodial staff on both campuses;
  • Assigning work orders;
  • Planning work assignments;
  • Inspecting buildings;
  • Responding to emergencies; 
  • Maintaining time records, etc.;
  • Participating in custodial duties, as necessary.

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT:

The Environmental & Facilities Custodial Services Department oversees the Facilities Operations areas of the University.  The department provides budget support and reconciliation of operation and expense accounts, and capital fund accounts.

NOTE:  A medical exam, drug screen, and criminal background check will be required prior to offer of employment.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising a large crew of Custodians and Lead Custodians or contract employees engaged in the cleaning of buildings or building complexes.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work of staff;
  • Provides staff training and assistance;
  • Conducts performance evaluations;
  • Determines priorities and plans crew work;
  • Establishes and maintains crew procedures;
  • Develops or makes recommendations on development of policies and standards;
  • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures;
  • Prepares reports and correspondence;
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and equipment;
  • Prepares work orders;
  • Inspects buildings on a regular basis to ensure established standards of cleanliness are maintained;
  • Maintains building security;
  • Receives and responds to complaints from staff in buildings;
  • Responds to building emergencies;
  • Maintains employee time records;
  • May participate in cleaning;
  • May act for supervisor in their absence;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  • Considerable knowledge of methods, materials and procedures used in building custodial and/or housekeeping work;

    • operate, care for and perform light maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work;
    • utilize computer software;
  • Supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of experience in building custodial and/or housekeeping work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a lead capacity.

NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Lead Custodian.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to those applicants who can demonstrate in their application:
  • Understanding of various cleaning and maintenance methods, including the use of appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Prior supervisory experience.
  • Experience updating projects and work orders through electronic systems.
  • Experience working independently.
  • Experience operating, caring for and performing light maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and/or assaultive and/or abusive patients or clients.
