The Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC), under the umbrella of the State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a qualified individual for the position of Nurse (PCN 79254) to join our team. POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

Please note: This position is classified as a Level 1 (Essential) employee in the event of extreme snow and ice conditions, extreme heat, inoperable heating facilities or any other emergency condition.

In any case of an emergency condition or when a decision is rendered by the Governor’s Office that non-essential employees are not required to report to work, or a decision is made for a delayed opening or early release, you are classified as an Level 1 (Essential) employee and are to report to work as scheduled.

Each Registered Nurse who is permanently assigned to the second or third shift shall receive a “recruitment and retention” yearly bonus of three thousand dollars ($3,000.00). This bonus shall be pro-rated for part-time Registered Nurses. This bonus shall be paid biweekly. In order to be eligible for this bonus, the Employee must have completed one year of service in the registered nurse classification.

The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS), is a health care agency whose mission is to promote the overall health and wellness of persons with behavioral health needs through an integrated network of holistic, comprehensive, effective, and efficient services and supports that foster dignity, respect, and self-sufficiency in those we serve.

The Connecticut Mental Health Center (CMHC) is an urban community mental health center with an exceptional 50-year tradition of serving individuals with serious mental illness and/or addiction.  Founded in 1966, CMHC is a partnership between DHMAS and the Yale Department of Psychiatry.  Each year over 4,000 people receive a variety of recovery-oriented services at CMHC and its satellite clinics.

The CMHC Inpatient Service makes admission decisions in consultation with Utilization Management staff from the DMHAS Office of the Commissioner. Residents of catchment areas 5, 6, 7, and 8, comprising the Greater New Haven area, are generally given priority for admission to CMHC’s beds. Many of the individuals who occupy the unit’s 20 beds are already in treatment at the Center, or have a prior history of inpatient care at CMHC or CVH. Psychiatric, social work, nursing and rehabilitation assessments guide the treatment, which is provided on the unit by a multi-disciplinary team, under the direction of an attending psychiatrist, and in collaboration with any providers who are involved in an individual’s outpatient care.  Treatment involves pharmacotherapy, individual, group, family, occupational, rehabilitative and milieu therapy, as well as medical treatment and assistance with discharge planning, including housing, finances, social and vocational rehabilitation, and the arranging of ongoing medical and psychiatric treatment. Length of stay on the unit varies depending upon the time needed by each individual for thorough assessment, stabilization, and development of a comprehensive discharge plan.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for providing a full range of professional nursing care.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Graduation from an accredited nursing program.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in a mental health facility

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a license or temporary permit as a Registered Professional Nurse in Connecticut.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to be fluent in a foreign language or proficient in the use of the American Sign Language in certain designated positions.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift and restrain individuals; may have exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
