The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT) invites its agency employees to apply for the position of Transportation Garage Supervisor located in the East Granby Repair facility.  Applications to this recruitment may be used for future vacancies in this job class.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:
  • Full-time (40 hours per week)
  • First shift (7:30 AM - 4:00 PM)
THE ROLE:
This position is responsible for overseeing and assigning daily duties to a crew of various Transportation Maintainers, Welders, Machinists, and Mechanics. Additional duties include:
  • Scheduling and assigning daily assignments
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and communicating with staff
  • Reviewing and evaluating the work of staff and making effective recommendations
  • Prioritizing production  
In your daily operations, you will implement and effectively enforce the Department’s operations and mission, incorporate appropriate labor relations and union contract language, Department policies and procedures, and communicate effectively with staff and outside entities, both verbally and written.

REQUIREMENTS:
  • Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the tank endorsement, and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview.   
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30.   
  • Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process.
  • Applicants invited to interview will be requested to supply a copy of their Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class A or B, with Tank Endorsement, valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) and copies of their last two performance appraisals. 
  • Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview.
  • Various storm events will require employees to be at work prior to, during, and after a storm or weather event, which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends. Additionally, in preparation for the winter season, overtime may be required to prepare the fleet and equipment

    PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

    In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for supervising a maintenance and repair garage for automotive, highway or airport maintenance equipment.

    EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

    • Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; 
    • Provides staff training and assistance; 
    • Conducts performance evaluations; 
    • Determines priorities and plans garage work; 
    • Establishes and maintains garage procedures; 
    • Develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; 
    • Acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; 
    • Prepares reports and correspondence; 
    • Inspects vehicles and equipment to test effectiveness of repairs; 
    • Performs or closely supervises intricate repair jobs involving special assignments; 
    • Performs related duties as required.

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

    • Considerable knowledge of and ability to diagnose motor and equipment problems and to use complicated testing equipment and welding devices; 
    • Knowledge of record keeping and inventory procedures;

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

    Five (5) years of experience in the repair and maintenance of automotive, highway and/or airport maintenance equipment.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

    One (1) year of the General Experience must have been as a highly skilled mechanic.

    NOTE: For state employees this experience is interpreted at the level of a Qualified Craft Worker (Automotive and Mechanical Equipment) or a Transportation Maintainer 4.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

    Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in automotive repair may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.

    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

    • Knowledge and experience of standard practices, materials, tools, and equipment used in the repair and fabrication of diesel, auto, and heavy equipment
    • Knowledge of potential occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary to maintain a safe working environment
    • Knowledge and experience with time management, workload scheduling. and setting priorities
    • Knowledge and experience with the State’s procurement regulations and parts/material inventory
    • Knowledge and experience with office reporting and procedures
    • Knowledge and experience with computer applications such as Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PP, etc.), TEAMS, One Drive, SharePoint, CoreCT, and AssetWorks
    • Experience working effectively in a high production environment
    • Experience supervising, reviewing, and evaluating the work of subordinates

    SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

    Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

    CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

    At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate will be made before persons are certified for appointment.

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

    • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
    • A physical examination may be required.

    WORKING CONDITIONS

    Incumbents may be required to lift; may be exposed to some risk of injury from equipment.
