Introduction




Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Stewards
  • Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Length of positions: Six months from date of hire, but no greater than 1,040 hours total. 
  • The duty station of these positions is the Department of Energy & Environmental Protection (DEEP) Marine Headquarters located at 333 Ferry Road, Old Lyme, CT, however, the job duties are field-oriented, and AIS Stewards will be stationed at public boat launches along the Connecticut River.
  • Primarily work first shift but adjustments may be made to match peak boat launch activity.
  • Work on weekends and Holidays may be required. 
Roles and responsibilities include:
  • AIS Stewards will play a critical role in increasing public awareness about and preventing the spread of these species both within the Connecticut River and to other waters through education and outreach.
  • Interacting with and educating boaters at boat launches along the Connecticut River about aquatic invasive species and clean boating practices.
  • Perform voluntary inspections of boats and trailers as they enter and exit boat launch areas to check for and remove aquatic invasive plants and animals.
  • Assisting with public outreach events, as needed; and 
  • Other duties, as assigned.
  • AIS Stewards will receive training in all of the duties listed above.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge of or experience working with aquatic invasive species.
  • College level course work and/or experience in one or more of the following: aquatic biology, limnology, water quality monitoring, ecology, botany, environmental science, or a related field.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Boating experience and CT Safe Boating Certificate or Certificate of Personal Watercraft Operation is a plus.
  • Must be willing to work outside in variable weather conditions and during weekends and holidays.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate. 
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
    1. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license. 
    2. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides. 
    3. College training in a specific field. 
    4. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities. 
  3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
