The State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), Bureau of Natural ResourcesUrban and Community Forestry Program is seeking to hire an Environmental Protection Seasonal Resource Assistant to assist with all aspects of DEEP’s Urban and Community Forestry sub-grant program. 

This is a unique opportunity to work at the state-level to help manage a sub-grant program while also working closely with municipal land managers, non-profit organizations, and community groups.  You will also become acquainted with national urban and community forestry initiatives and funding opportunities.

Connecticut's Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) Forestry Division encourages the long-term practice of responsible and sustainable forest management. We accomplish this by; 1) Protecting Connecticut's forest resources from the effects of fire, insects, disease, and misuse. 2) Providing accurate and timely information about Connecticut's forest resources. 3) Certifying forest practitioners, 4) Managing the State Forests, 5) Engaging municipalities and citizens in the work of urban forestry, and 6) Providing guidance to private and municipal forestland owners. 

With over 60% of Connecticut’s population residing in urban areas, urban and community forests play a critical role in the provisioning of services and benefits for Connecticut residents and beyond. The Urban and Community Forestry Program housed within the Forestry Division is charged with advising, assisting, and providing resources to municipalities, non-profit organizations, and residents to help them grow, maintain, and improve their urban and community forests.

This seasonal position is approximately 8 months in duration (no more than 1,040 hours), up to 35 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
As an Environmental Protection Seasonal Resource Assistant with the Urban and Community Forestry Program, you will have the opportunity to:
  • Assist with the creation and maintenance of a state-wide Urban and Community Forestry sub-grant database; Compile and organize grant resources, grant applications, and correspondence with grantees and potential grant applicants; 
  • Assist with pre- and post-project implementation site visits as well as interim site visits; and 
  • Provide technical assistance as needed.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Under the supervision of the Urban Forestry Coordinator, assists with the creation and maintenance of a state-wide Urban and Community Forestry sub-grant database. Compiles and organizes grant resources, grant applications, and correspondences with grantees and potential grant applicants. Assists with pre- and post-project implementation site visits as well as interim site visits and technical assistance as needed. Helps prepare project agreements. Helps prepare and deliver presentations and workshops on topics related to grant writing and final reporting. Provides general administrative support for all aspects of the Urban and Community Forestry Grant program. May create reports, maps, and other data visualizations to convey outcomes from urban and community forestry grant programs.    

Performs other administrative duties: uses computer (write reports, manages databases, GIS); responds (e.g., written & orally) to correspondence & inquiries; provides recommendations to supervisor & staff on assessment of database to improve efficiency; reviews plans & documents prepared by others.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Ability to follow instructions.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Associate or Bachelors Degree with a STEM discipline related to forestry or urban forestry; 
  • Experience communicating to the public on the phone, email or in person;
  • Experience applying to grants or managing grant programs;
  • Experience creating and maintaining databases;
  • Experience with organizational prioritization and time-management;
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Outlook);
  • Experience in urban forestry, arboriculture, forestry, and/or horticulture.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class who are assigned as supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:
    1. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.
    2. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.
    3. College training in a specific field.
    4. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.
  3. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
