Introduction
The State of Connecticut, Department of Administrative Services (DAS), is now accepting applications for a Durational Mail Handler within the Business Services Mailroom which supports statewide agencies providing courier service.
THE ROLE:
We are looking for someone who will be accountable for performing a full range of tasks involving the receipt, processing, and distribution of mail.
Duties include but are not limited to:
- Performing agency's internal mail operations.
- Driving a state vehicle to pick-up and deliver multiple statewide
- courier mail routes.
- Operating and maintaining mail & shipping equipment- metering, sorting and insert machinery.
NOTE: Applicants will be initially placed in vacancies under durational appointment with anticipated end dates of 12 months. These appointments may be extended. Benefits and leaves will be subject to the appropriate collective bargaining contract language and Connecticut General Statutes.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weighs and stamps postaged, franked or metered mail; drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; signs for insured, certified, registered and special delivery mail; updates and maintains records; may maintain daily cash records; schedules vehicle maintenance; provides postal service assistance to customers; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; some oral and written communication skills; some interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to utilize computer software; ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; some mechanical ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Possession of a valid, current drivers' license.
- Experience in mail service coordination.
- Experience providing customer service to public patrons.
- Experience using Pitney Bowes Send Suite Shipping Software.
- Experience using Metering & Inserting Equipment.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
