The State of Connecticut, Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is seeking to fill one Maintainer (Driver & Equipment Operator) position in our Facilities Operations Unit.

POSITION DETAILS
These positions will be based out of Meriden but can be used statewide for all DESPP facilities, specifically but not limited to the CSP/POST Training Academy, Mulcahy Campus, and the Simsbury Firing Range. This position will be responsible for but not limited to the following:
  • Lawncare and general Groundskeeping
  • Building Maintenance
  • Custodial Tasks
  • Snow and Ice Removal from Nov.1 to April 15 annually (Mandatory). This requires being called in after hours and may require multiple days per event. As an essential employee, attendance is required even if the state is closed by the Governor.
  • Assisting other employees as needed
  • Other related tasks as deemed necessary
This is a full-time position and will be located in Meriden, CT. This is an in-person position. Statewide travel will be required. The schedule is Monday-Friday between 7:30am and 3:30pm.

Candidates who have been selected for employment with the Department of Emergency Services & Public Protection are subject to a detailed background investigation, including a fingerprint supported state and federal criminal history record check along with reference checks. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing duties a substantial amount of time (75%) in one or both of the following areas:

- patient/client transportation
- grounds care (outside services) equipment operation

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Operates the following equipment a substantial amount of time (75%): Skid steer loader; High productivity front end machine or multi-attachment snow blower and/or mower; Power drain cleaning equipment Power striping machine; Chain saws and/or brush chippers; Self propelled sweeping and/or vacuum machine; Other related commercial and heavy duty equipment;
  • Keeps simple records and prepares reports;
  • Performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to operate equipment and vehicles used in daily work; ability to learn policies and procedures; ability to operate, care for and perform minor maintenance on tools and equipment used in daily work; some ability in simple recordkeeping.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience operating commercial zero-turn mowers, weed trimmers, and landscaping hand tools.
  • Experience operating machinery: skid-steer, backhoes, loaders and trucks with up to 5 ton payload capacity.
  • Experience in snow and ice removal: plowing, snow blowers, shoveling and deicing.
  • Custodial experience: floorcare, cleaning and sanitizing, and trash removal.
  • Building maintenance experience: bulb changing, sink and toilet repairs, and HVAC filter changing.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.
2. The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
