The State of Connecticut Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is now accepting applications for multiple exciting Qualified Craft Worker (Automotive And Mechanical Equipment) opportunities within the Fleet Operations Division, with openings currently in Norwich and Wethersfield, CT.

The Role:
The Qualified Craft Worker role will perform a full range of highly skilled duties in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area. Discover the opportunity to:
  • Perform the most complex repairs and maintenance on a variety of State-owned light-duty vehicles
  • Perform an exhaustive list of complex diagnostic, maintenance, repair, fabrication work, and safety inspections on executive branch light-duty vehicles owned and leased by DAS Fleet Operations
  • Service, maintain, and repair all types of light-duty vehicles from standard services to complete dismantles, overhauls, and reassembles of vehicle components
  • Operate highly technical automotive diagnostic service equipment, mechanical repair apparatus, shop equipment, and support any related automotive garage duties as required
  • Performs related duties as required
Technicians are provided with all the tools and specialty equipment required to perform maintenance and repairs on today's newest vehicles and state of the art technology systems. Fleet garages have the latest diagnostic equipment for various well-known car brands' products in addition to direct access to each original equipment manufacturer's (OEM) service information websites and digital repair manuals. Work uniforms are provided including an allowance for safety shoes once a year.

Selection Plan

These positions will be filled in accordance with contractual language, reemployment, SEBAC, transfer, promotion and merit employment rules. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency, this class is accountable for performing a full range of highly skilled duties in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs highly skilled tasks in accordance with standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices and codes; diagnoses failure in all types of automotive and heavy mobile equipment; services, dismantles, overhauls and reassembles front ends, engines, standard and automatic transmissions, rear ends, hydraulic systems and automotive electrical systems; constructs and repairs any needed parts; welds or brazes parts by oxyacetylene torch or electric welding; makes estimates of time, personnel and determines and obtains required materials on assigned tasks; keeps necessary records; in smaller trade areas may be the sole worker running a skilled trade area; may perform duties related to similar trade areas as required; may operate testing equipment required to diagnose automotive electronic components; may act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts; may operate heavy equipment; may respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of and ability to apply standard tools, materials, methods and standard automotive and mechanical equipment trade practices; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to prepare estimates and keep shop records; some ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the automotive and mechanical equipment trade.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years of the General Experience must have been performing skilled automotive and mechanical equipment trades.
Note: For State Employees, this is interpreted at the level of Skilled Maintainer or Transportation Maintainer 2.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

1. Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
2. Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Intern in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the General and Special Experience.
3. Experience performing technical duties within the automotive and mechanical equipment trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General and Special Experience on a year for year basis.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience diagnosing Suspension and Steering components in a light-duty automotive repair shop
  • Experience diagnosing Electrical System components in a light-duty automotive repair shop
  • Experience diagnosing Heating and Air-conditioning components in a light-duty automotive repair shop
  • Experience diagnosing Braking Systems in a light-duty automotive repair shop
  • Experience diagnosing Engine Performance issues in a light-duty automotive repair shop
  • Experience with providing Customer Service in an automotive environment

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess or acquire and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties of the class.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles; and may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions and/or environmental conditions.
2. The appointing authority may require completion of hazardous materials training programs, such as asbestos, PCB, PFAS, consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class.
