ROLE HIGHLIGHTS
As the Bookstore Supervisor 1, you will be the sole staff representative responsible for overseeing the operations of the Connecticut Fire Academy Bookstore. Additional responsibilities of this position include but are not limited to:
- Working with training and certification unit staff, Regional Fire School directors, local fire department chiefs and training officers to identify and forecast fire service training and related educational support material needs,
- Conducting procurement, receipt, inventory management, marketing and sales of items,
- Maintaining and managing all financial records and reports using assigned Point of Sales software,
- Issuing invoices and managing accounts receivable and collections ledgers,
- Establishing policies and procedures to include pricing strategies,
- Supporting the CT Fire Academy's Recruit Firefighter Training and Introduction to the Fire Service Summer Camp needs for clothing and related support materials,
- Developing a plan to transition to on-line internet-based sales.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Departments of Energy and Environmental Protection and Emergency Services and Public Protection, this class is accountable for the operation of the bookstore and supervision of employees.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Supervises a system of inventory control; forecasts stock requirements; supervises the purchase of merchandise; interviews sales representatives; supervises display of merchandise; maintains financial and personnel records; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans store work; establishes and maintains store procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other departments, agencies and others regarding store policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; maintains housekeeping and security standards; may determine selling prices and control obsolescence; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Considerable knowledge of the principles and methods of retail purchasing and merchandising; knowledge of stocking and inventory control methods; oral and written communications skills; interpersonal skills; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of experience in retailing in a bookstore setting.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of the General Experience must have been in a working lead capacity at or above the level of Bookstore Assistant Supervisor.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
College training may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience working independently at the Manager level in a retail environment,
- Experience working in a Bookstore or College co-op,
- Experience with inventory and financial management as it relates to retail,
- Experience with set-up, deployment and operation of Point of Sales (POS) software and On-line sales experience.
