Introduction

In the State of Connecticut, Tunxis Community College (TXCC) is a constituent unit of the Board of Regents for Higher Education (BOR), Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) established in 1970 by an act of the Connecticut state legislature as the twelfth institution in the Connecticut state community college system.  The CSCU provides access to academically rigorous and innovative education and training focused on student success.  Our core collective responsibility is to continuously assess practices and policies, and transform the world we live in by eliminating inequities.

We are currently recruiting for a Mail Handler position to work at Tunxis Community College in Farmington, CT.  This position is full-time, 37.5 hours per week, 1st shift, Monday through Friday, 8:30am - 4:30pm, and is necessary to ensure that incoming and interoffice mail is sorted and distributed efficiently and accurately to the campus community.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weighs and stamps postaged, franked or metered mail; drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; signs for insured, certified, registered and special delivery mail; updates and maintains records; may maintain daily cash records; schedules vehicle maintenance; provides postal service assistance to customers; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; some oral and written communication skills; some interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to utilize computer software; ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; some mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preference will be given to individuals with customer relations experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
