The State of Connecticut, Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) is a free-standing. modern facility located on the UCONN Health Center Campus in Farmington, CT. The office is a state-wide medical examiner system charged with the investigation of sudden and unexpected deaths that, by statute, fall under our jurisdiction. Our agency operates 24/7/365 performing these death investigations.
We are recruiting for two (2) part-time Special Investigator (Medical Examiner) positions to work 24 hours per week in our facility located in Farmington, CT. NOTE: These positions will require occasional holiday coverage. Knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques, and knowledge of medical terminology is required. The incumbent in this role:
- Must possess a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator’s License and may be required to travel. Must be physically fit to perform some lifting.
- Must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.
- May be exposed to some risk of injury from such elements as toxic vapors or broken glass and may be exposed to disagreeable conditions including communicable infectious diseases.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state agency or quasi-public entity this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in conducting investigations related to alleged violations of state laws and regulations or sudden and unexplained deaths.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Visits scene of death; reviews medical records; may serve as photographer in routine cases; conducts investigations related to assigned complaints, alleged violations of state laws and regulations or sudden and/or unexplained deaths; interviews witnesses, complainants, medical and hospital personnel and others to obtain information; secures evidence in form of statements, documents, records and exhibits which may be used in administrative hearings and/or court proceedings; researches, collects and evaluates data; compiles information; writes reports and recommends appropriate corrective action; answers public inquiries; may prepare affidavits and applications for arrest warrants; may prepare search and seizure warrants; may issue citations; may testify at hearings and in court; may conduct surveillance; may secure samples for testing; may conduct legal research; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of medical terminology; knowledge of investigatory methods and techniques; knowledge of relevant state laws and regulations; knowledge of relevant professional terminology; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; interviewing skills; ability to utilize computer software.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
Five (5) years of investigatory experience in a medicolegal investigative agency, police or military setting involving sudden and/or unexplained deaths.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
- College training in forensic science may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.
- A Master's degree in a closely related field may be substituted for one (1) additional year of the General Experience.
- American Board of Medicolegal Death Investigations Certification.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, web based systems.
- Ability to adapt to high stress and traumatic situations.
- Experience working in a medical examiner/coroner office.
- Prior experience working in a medical setting.
- Experience reviewing medical records/medical terminology.
1. Incumbents in this class may be required to be a Notary Public.

3. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
