We are accepting applications from candidates who meet the qualifications for Lead Power Plant Operator-Energy Center. This position is located in Facilities Management. This position is full time (40 hours per week) position with the shift and schedule to be determined on 1st, 2nd or 3rd shift and may be required to work on weekends and holidays.  

The incumbent in this position is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Power Plant Operators engaged in performing duties in the operation and maintenance of the cogeneration power plant.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At Central Connecticut State University this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor for Power Plant Operators engaged in performing duties in the operation and maintenance of the cogeneration power plant.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans power plant workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews work; provides staff training and assistance to ensure economical dispatch of major equipment such as reciprocating engines, generators, boilers, chillers and ancillary equipment, through use of a distributed control system; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; acts as liaison with operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; leads operation of major equipment by giving technical direction to power plant operators; contacts supervisor for authority for plant shut down or power outage procedures; leads operation of equipment for most economical production of power within compliance of federal and state regulatory requirements; ensures safe and reliable operation of equipment using distributed control system; coordinates and works with vendors for maintenance and repairs or installation of new equipment; prepares reports and correspondence as required; may perform duties of operators when necessary; may make recommendations on policies or standards; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of theory and application of the operation of a cogeneration power plant; considerable knowledge of theory and application of large high pressure steam boilers; considerable knowledge of regulatory and reporting requirements; knowledge of power plant operations; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in a cogeneration power plant including the operation, maintenance and repair of combustion turbines, heat recovery steam generators, steam turbines, emergency generators, boilers, chillers, distributed control systems and ancillary equipment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been performing highly skilled duties in the operation and maintenance of a cogeneration power plant.
Note: For State Employees this is interpreted at the level of Power Plant Operator - Energy Center.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in mechanical engineering, power technology or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of three (3) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights, use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles and may be exposed to significant levels of noise, dust, heat and risk of injury from equipment and or environmental conditions.
