Introduction


The Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS) invites qualified applicants to apply for first and second shift Buildings & Grounds Patrol Officer positions at Prince Technical High School in Hartford, Bullard Technical High School in Bridgeport, Norwich Technical High School in Norwich, Platt Technical High School in Milford, and Windham Technical High School in Willimantic (Windham).

  • Pursues and participates in global partnerships that provide CTECS students with international exposure and experience.
The Role: CTECS serves approximately 11,200 full-time high school students. You will be responsible for performing a full range of school security duties to include:
 
  • Enforce regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by assigned agency. 
  • Direct traffic on state property. 
  • Issue tickets for violations. 
  • Give information and assistance to visitors. 
  • Guard entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, theft, and other violations. 
  • Perform routine vehicle and foot patrol duty and monitors security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts. 
  • Provide security escorts. 
  • Provide first aid when necessary. 
  • Perform dispatching and record keeping functions at a desk post, etc. See other examples of duties below. 
Schedules: 
  • 35 hours/week Monday - Friday from 7:00 AM - 2:30 PM at A.I. Prince Technical School in Hartford, CT.   
  • 32.5 hours/week, Monday - Friday from 2:30 PM - 9:00 PM at Bullard-Havens Technical High School in Bridgeport, CT. 
  • 32.5 hours/week, Monday - Friday from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM at Norwich Technical High School in Norwich, CT. 
  • 30 hours/week, Monday - Friday from 9:30 AM - 4:00 pm at Platt Technical High School in Milford, CT. 
  • 30 hours/week, Monday - Friday from 9:30 AM - 4:00 pm at Windham Technical High School in Windham, CT. 
  • 30 hours/week, Monday - Friday from 6:45 am - 1:15 pm at Windham Technical High School in Windham, CT.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At a state institution, university or school, facility or at the State Regional Market this class is accountable for providing basic security services designed to insure the control and safety of clients, students, employees and the visiting public.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Enforces regulations relating to parking and traffic control as established by assigned agency; directs traffic on state property; issues tickets for violations; gives information and assistance to visitors; guards entrances and exits to prevent trespass, vandalism, theft and other violations; performs routine vehicle and foot patrol duty and monitors security and alarm systems to detect theft and other criminal acts; provides security escorts; provides first aid when necessary; performs dispatching and record keeping functions at a desk post; at a state hospital, assists in maintaining order among patients; assists in searching for missing patients; may assist in fire prevention and fire fighting activities; at an agency or institution, may oversee the activities of fellow officers as designated; at the State Regional Market, collects stall fees from vendors and prepares receipts of same; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Interpersonal skills; basic oral and written communication skills; ability to think and act quickly in an emergency with judgment and discretion.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience or training which would provide the skills and abilities indicated above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience working in the field of security. 
  • Experience working security in a high school. 
  • Experience performing foot patrol duty within a high school. 
  • Experience working at a post or desk checking in visitors using a security data base. 
  • Experience providing escorts within a high school.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Appointment to positions within the Connecticut Marketing Authority will be in accordance with Section 22-63a(d) of the Connecticut General Statutes.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
  3. Incumbents in this class may be required to obtain and maintain a Standard First Aid Certificate and/or CPR certification.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Incumbents in this class must have general good health, be free from any disease or injury which would impair health or usefulness and possess and retain sufficient physical strength, stamina, agility, endurance and visual and auditory acuity required to perform all the duties of the class.
  2. Applicants may be required to pass a physical examination.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to the attendant discomforts of working outdoors, to the effort of prolonged periods of walking and standing while on foot patrol and/or guard duty, and to some danger of injury in performing the duties of the class.
