The DDS - South Region - Currently has two current (2) full-time, thirty five hours (35) per week, first shift job opportunities to be a Licensed Practical Nurse based out of the Shunpike Road Community Living Arrangement (CLA) Group Home, in Cromwell.
Shift Information:
- PCN 23049; Wednesday through Saturday, 6:30 am - 3:15 pm. Regular days off, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday
- PCN 23190; Friday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, 6:30 am - 3:15 pm. Regular days off, Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday.
- However, work schedule flexibility may be required in order to meet the demands of the job

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state facility, this class is accountable for rendering bedside care or mental health services to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities in instances where the services of a registered nurse are not required.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Duties include but are not limited too:
- Provides nursing care for individuals residing in a community living arrangement (CLA) group home
- Administers medications and treatments which may include insulin and glucagon injections
- Documents medications and treatments administered
- Monitors consumers’ health status and needs and reports changes to the registered nurse and to prescribers
- Maintains health and safety standards for residences/programs, including infection control practices
- Provides foley catheterization care, respiratory treatments, G and J-tube feedings and care, and colostomy care
- Provides incidental teaching to individuals served, staff, and families concerning medications and their use
- Monitors for desired and side effects of medications and treatments
- Maintains medication security, performs narcotic counts
- Transcribes and implements prescribers' orders; ensures supplies and medications are ordered and maintained
- Perform emergency first aid as needed
- May provide dressing changes and other treatments
- Documents all care in individuals’ medical records and completes required facility documentation; performs related residential duties as required
- In addition, the LPN in this position may assume lead worker duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of practical nursing specialties and bedside care; knowledge of various medications used in conjunction for the care of individuals who have physical and/or intellectual disabilities; knowledge of infection control practices; some knowledge of nutrition and diets; basic knowledge of medical and lab sciences; considerable interpersonal skills; ability to keep records; some ability to lead staff.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
License or temporary permit to practice nursing in Connecticut by the State Board of Examiners for Nursing.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preference will be given to candidates who have:
- Experience working with individuals with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities
- Experience communicating with non-verbal individuals
- Experience supporting individuals that may exhibit mild to severe challenging behaviors
- Experience communicating internally and externally with a diverse population both over the telephone and in written inquiries
- Experience with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, Outlook, and Teams
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
DEPARTMENT OF DEVELOPMENTAL SERVICES: Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Connecticut Motor Vehicle Operator's license, Public Passenger Endorsement or Commercial Driver's license for designated positions.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift/restrain individuals; may have some exposure to communicable/infectious diseases and to some risk of injury from assaultive/abusive individuals; may be exposed to disagreeable conditions.
