Whiting Forensic Hospital specializes in providing inpatient services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system. The hospital consists of 91 maximum security beds and 138 enhanced security beds. Services are provided to individuals who are admitted under the following categories: Psychiatric Security Review Board commitment, Criminal court order for restoration of competency to stand trial, Civil commitment (voluntary or involuntary) and Transfer from the Department of Correction (during period of incarceration or at end of sentence). Discharge options are dependent on legal status and the purpose of admission.

We seek qualified individuals for two Assistant Cook positions (PCN: 24451 & 25335). These are full-time, 37.5 hours weekly and are located at 1000 Silver Street in Middletown, CT. These are Hazardous Duty Positions.
The schedule for these positions are as follows:
- PCN: 24393 -Thursday, Friday & Saturday 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- PCN: 27448 - Sunday, Monday & Tuesday 5:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

*The entry level compensation rate for this position shall be ten percent (10%) below the minimum compensation listed on this bulletin for an employee in his/her initial working test period. Upon completion of the initial working test period, the employee shall advance to the minimum (Step 1) of the salary schedule and be paid accordingly.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
This class is accountable for performing a full range of basic tasks in the preparation and cooking of food.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs a variety of basic tasks in preparing soups, salads, meats, vegetables, desserts, beverages, nourishments, etc.; cleans, washes, polishes pots, pans, dishes, silverware, kitchen equipment, floors, walls, etc.; operates kitchen machines and equipment; may participate in serving food and packing food for delivery; may receive training in the preparation of food on a large scale; may prepare food in the absence of the cook; assists with the receiving and storage of food; may assist in the preparation of production records; performs related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Some knowledge of simple food preparation; some knowledge of liquid and dry weights and measures; some interpersonal skills; some oral and written communication skills; ability to follow instructions and learn routines; some mathematical ability.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any experience and training which would provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
The Preferred Candidate will have:
- A SafeServe Certification;
- Experience and/or training preparing, packing, and serving food in a hospital setting;
- Experience in preparing soups, salads, meats, vegetables, desserts and beverages;
- Experience serving approximately 300+ meals per mealtime in a hospital setting.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

Incumbents must be free from communicable diseases.

A physical examination may be required.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment and utensils used in the kitchen and from patients/clients.
