The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is recruiting for the position of State School Principal 1 to join our team across the state. These positions may be directed to any one of our correctional facilities based on the candidates education endorsement and department needs. 

About Us: 

The CT DOC is a diverse agency with a wide variety of employees from Correction Officers, Educators, Managers and Skilled Professionals. We value differences that make us stronger as a team and support our mission statement. 

Our agency is responsible for corrections in the state of Connecticut. The agency operates 14 correctional facilities. We have our headquarters in Wethersfield. DOC protects public safety by ensuring offenders serve their sentences of imprisonments in facilities that are safe, humane, and provide re-entry programming. 

Position Highlights:

The DOC Unified School District #1 is dedicated to providing quality educational programs for incarcerated individuals. Academic knowledge, vocational competencies and life skills integrated with technology are offered to students in a positive environment to foster lifelong learning, multicultural awareness and a successful transition to society. 

This position is 40 hours per week, first shift, working Monday to Friday.

Selection Plan

In order to be considered for this job opening, you must be a current State of CT employee, who has permanent state status* and meet the Minimum Qualifications as listed on the job opening.  You must specify your qualifications on your application.

*For employees in the classified service, permanent status is obtained after successful completion of a working test period.  For employees in the unclassified service, permanent status is obtained after serving in a position for at least six months (full-time or full-time equivalent).

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

Within a State Unified School District, plans, organizes, directs, and controls a state facility's full time educational program comprised of a staff of less than 15 educational professionals.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

-Developing and administering school programs consistent with school district goals and objectives.
-Providing leadership and direction to staff with regard to the ongoing evaluation and improvement of educational programs, including curricula and extra-curricular activities 
-Continuing to acquire professional knowledge and learn of current developments in the educational field by attending seminars, workshops or professional meetings, or by conducting research 
-Coordinating with the central office in recruitment and selection of employees 
-Working with employees to resolve complaints, difficulties, and other matters related to personnel management

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of philosophy and methods of education and teaching; knowledge of the principles and practices of education for special needs population; ability to plan, organize, direct and control an educational program; decision making ability; ability to prepare and present clear and concise written and oral reports; ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with facility and departmental professionals and administrators, professional staff of the Department of Education and other state agencies, public school systems, local education agencies, parents and others contacted in the work; administrative ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

A Master's degree in education or related field plus eighteen (18) semester hours of graduate credit and completion of fifty (50) school months of successful teaching or service employment as identified in State of Connecticut, Regulation of State Board of Education, Sec. 10-145d-574 (a - f).

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will possess:
  • A certification as an Intermediate Administrator (#092); 
  • Experience motivating and inspiring excellence in others, and holding staff accountable for student growth, academic results, performance, and culturally responsive practices; 
  • Experience using managerial skills including delegation, effective decision-making and problem solving; 
  • Experience using multiple approaches to address behaviors and instructional practices that empower students;
  • Instructional experience in urban/multi-cultural settings; 
  • Experience analyzing all federal and state mandates and regulations; 
  • Experience using data and a research-based focus on student achievement. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Connecticut State Board of Education certification as a Intermediate Administrator/Supervisor will be required at time of appointment.
  2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
