Introduction



The State Department of Education (SDE), which oversees the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS), is recruiting for an Education Consultant.  This individual will provide technical assistance in the area of Career and Technical Education for the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster with an emphasis on Culinary Arts.

This position is located at the State of Connecticut CTECS Central Office at 39 Woodland Street, Hartford, CT.  This is a full-time 35-hour per week position that operates year-round, Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Key responsibilities of this position is creating curriculum, assessments, and progress monitoring tools; Using data that informs as it relates to student outcomes and success; Assisting in recruiting, hiring and support of new and existing teachers in the Hospitality and Tourism Cluster; Serving as a conduit to business and industry and track the employment of CTECS graduates; Writing specifications for competitive bidding of equipment used in the Culinary, Hospitality, Tourism and Guest Services Management industries; Monitoring of the inventory process in conjunction with state auditing procedures.

Special Experience Note:  For this position, the appropriate certification issued by the State Board of Education is for certification in Occupational Subjects (#090) in one of the following trade/career areas:  Culinary, Hospitality, Tourism and Guest Services Management.  In order to be considered for this position, applicants must hold certification in one or more of the above areas at the time of application.  Applicants should respond accordingly in any supplemental and/or referral questionnaire.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Education, plans and executes programs of extensive difficulty and scope for the improvement of education in the State; does related work as required.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Assists a Bureau Chief in supervising the broad educational programs and services offered by the State; develops and administers specific programs of major importance within the framework of policies outlined by the Bureau Chief; provides professional leadership and guidance to school authorities, professional organizations, students and various community groups and individuals; may assist in preparing and administering the allocated budget, and in directing the routine functioning of the bureau.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Thorough knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education with particular reference to the field concerned; teaching skill; considerable ability to deal effectively with others; considerable administrative ability; ability to prepare comprehensive written reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

An earned advanced degree and eight (8) years of professional experience OR in lieu thereof an equivalent combination of experience and training as approved by the Board of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in all aspects of the Culinary Arts with successful employment in the field;
  • Experience in Culinary, Hospitality, Tourism or Guest Management related production work;  
  • Experience with all aspects of food preparation and service, job-site safety;
  • Experience working with state auditing department on policies and procedures; 
  • Experience updating district production policies and scheduling visits for Superintendent of Schools job-site visits;  
  • Knowledge of health and safety regulations as it pertains to Culinary, Hospitality, Tourism or Guest Services; 
  • Knowledge of all aspects of a restaurant's operational and organizational needs including financial and structural requirements;
  • Knowledge of current industry trends and active participation in professional organizations; 
  • Knowledge and experience in the use of Microsoft Office Suite (emphasis on Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access); 
  • Knowledge of Google product applications (Docs, Sheets, Slides Drive and Classroom); Positive work history reflective of the Connecticut Code of Responsibility for Educators;
  • Hold serve-safe certification(s) sanitation safety certified;

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must hold an appropriate certificate issued by State Board of Education.
