DOL’s Facilities unit is recruiting for a Lead Mail Handler in the mail room located in Wethersfield. In this role, you will oversee the daily operations of mail actives, provide staff training and assistance. You will act as liaison with operating units along with outside organizations regarding mail processing. In this role you would maintain equipment readiness.

This is onsite work 37.5 hours Monday-Friday between core operating hours of 7:00am to 5:00pm. This position is classified as “essential” for reporting purposes. The incumbent in this role must possess a CT Drivers License and be able to lift moderate to heavy loads.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency mail service operation this class is accountable for acting as a working supervisor with responsibility for a minimum of two other employees while performing unit work activities; may act as the assistant to a Mail Services Supervisor; may supervise mail operations in a small agency.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Plans mail service unit workflow and determines priorities; schedules, assigns, oversees, and reviews work; establishes and maintains mail service unit procedures; provides staff training and assistance; conducts or assists in conducting performance evaluations; acts as liaison with operating units, agencies, and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; operates and adjusts postage metering machines; performs minor repairs; sets up equipment; participates in the operation of the mail service including pick-up and delivery of mail; signs for registered or certified mail; maintains and orders supplies; may make recommendations on policies or standards; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; ability to coordinate mail service operations; ability to recognize equipment problems and prescribe repairs; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; mechanical ability; ability to utilize computer software; some supervisory ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Three (3) years of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience in supervising and staff training.
  • Experience of US Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail.
  • Experience operating equipment such as mail inserters and mail meter.
  • Experience in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook and Teams.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights.
