The Bureaus of Air Management, Materials Management and Compliance Assurance, and Water Protection and Land Reuse, focus on this mission through environmental monitoring, permitting, enforcement, cleanup of contaminated sites, and pollution prevention strategies.
DEEP has a current job opportunity for an Engineer Intern within the Bureau of Air Management, Enforcement Division, Source Emissions Monitoring Unit. Engineer Interns receive training under direction of a supervisor or senior staff for a period of one year before being promoted to Air Pollution Control Engineer 1 upon successful completion of the training period. This position provides a unique opportunity to join the team committed to implementing the air emissions testing and monitoring programs at stationary sources of air pollution throughout the state to enforce Clean Air Act requirements. As a trainee, interns learn to ensure compliance with applicable federal and state air emissions testing, monitoring and reporting requirements.
The position will work out of our downtown Hartford Office, located at 79 Elm Street, across from historic Bushnell Park.
This position is full-time, 35 hours per week, Monday – Friday.
Salary Note: Upon initial entry to this class, incumbents will be placed in Salary Group ES 18, step 5, $55,625/yr.

Performs a wide variety of increasingly difficult duties as technical skills are acquired during course of training period.
Target position duties include: assisting in the evaluation of all types of air pollution sources and their associated control equipment, assisting with air emission rate calculations, conducting reviews of air emission test protocols and monitoring plans, stack climbing to audit stack testing, auditing air emission test and monitoring equipment certification programs, auditing data acquisition and analysis systems, reviewing air emission test and monitoring equipment certification reports, preparing detailed compliance evaluation reports and initiating enforcement actions; meeting with representatives of air pollution sources, the public, and other officials in matters related to source emissions testing and monitoring; and performing related duties as required. Interns will be required to attend formal training classes and review self-study materials to enhance their knowledge of air pollution control.
