Introduction

    

The State of Connecticut, State Department of Education is recruiting for a full-time Education Staff Assistant position within the Connecticut Technical Education and Career System (CTECS).  The incumbent in this role will direct and oversee operations within the system's central office, while acting as the liaison between the Superintendent and the CTECS Board.  This position will assist in the coordination of the Superintendent's daily activities, as well as other activities within the System's central office.  This position will also work closely with the System's new Legal Director on matters pertaining to legislation and will participate in the drafting and reviewing of legislative proposals, regulations and policy documents for the System.  The position will also coordinate district policy, practice and administration with the Communications Director for internal communication.

This position will report directly to the Superintendent and will provide oversight to the System's Board, while helping to coordinate their monthly meeting agendas and any other activities they may undertake, including, but not limited to, their strategic plan and other long-term priorities and goals.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Education assists the Secretary, State Board of Education, in the performance of special assignments in matters pertaining to educational policy and other State Board responsibilities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Acts as an executive assistant to the Secretary, State Board of Education; prepares policy materials for presentation to the State Board of Education; may work with representatives of the State, Federal, Local and Legislative agencies on educational matters; prepares reports on matters of concern to the State Board of Education as required; participates in the planning of educational goals and strategies; coordinates the dissemination of information to interested parties; assists in the organization and staffing of units of the Department; may assist in developing the State Board of Education agenda; performs research projects as directed; does related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of the basic philosophy of education; knowledge of organizational behavior and planning; ability to plan educational policy; ability to prepare comprehensive reports; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships; administrative ability; considerable skill in oral and written expression.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Demonstrated competence to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position as determined by the State Board of Education.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with the following experience and training will be given preference:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Science or a closely-related field 
  • Five (5) years of experience overseeing the functions of a professional office
  • Three (3) years of general knowledge and experience pertaining to the daily operations of a school district 
  • Experience interacting with state agencies
  • Experience working with a local or State Board of Education 
  • Experience coordinating meetings for a variety of committees/panels
  • Experience with the legislative process as it pertains to education matters
  • Experience with coordinating activities for high-level officials in an organization
  • Experience forecasting and setting up board/committee schedules for future years
  • Experience preparing board/committee work plans and implementing via agendas and meetings
  • Experience planning, organizing and coordinating office workflow
  • Experience in developing work performance and procedural standards and guidelines
  • Experience in determining priorities and assigning and reviewing work for timeliness and conformity to agency policies and procedures

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Must hold an appropriate certificate issued by the State Board of Education.
