Building Security & Video Systems Design Engineer

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction (DOC) is seeking highly motivated individuals for a Building Security & Video Systems Electrical Design Engineer to design and oversee controls, video and security system installation projects as well as their operation, maintenance and troubleshooting within our 14 Correctional Facilities.  This position is located in Central Office in Wethersfield, CT and is full-time, 35 hours per week.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for acting as a working lead and/or for performing the most complex tasks in an area of electrical engineering.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Project management including specification creation, drawings, site meetings, contractor interface, document management.
  • Technical assistance on video, control and security systems including network components, servers, PLC/PAC, OIT, application software,  overall system health checks.
  • AutoCAD-LT usage for video and control projects, environmental site drawings, office layouts, field requests for specific areas.
  • Training of staff at sites on control, video and security system operation, system maintenance, problem troubleshooting.
  • Review designs and installations for compliance to applicable State building and life safety codes.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of principles of electric power generation and distribution systems, signals, sound communications, illumination and electrical wiring systems, utility company standard practices and state and federal codes; knowledge of engineering drafting; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; considerable ability to analyze and interpret reports and test results; ability to prepare or review specifications and cost estimates; ability to evaluate merits and determine adequacy of engineering submissions; ability to utilize computer software; some ability to lead.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Seven (7) years of experience performing electrical engineering design.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in engineering may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

The preferred candidate will possess experience designing automated controls, security and video systems. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to some risk of injury or physical harm from construction environments and a moderate degree of discomfort from exposure to year round weather conditions.
