The beautiful, gently sloping, soft sandy beach, picnic areas, train watching, diverse trail systems and salt marsh viewing platforms make the State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) parks ideal for families. Try crabbing or fishing.  Look for ospreys, cranes, and herons or other waterfowl.  CT State Parks provide something for all members of the family.

DEEP's Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division, Lifeguard Program, has three (3) opportunities for Beach Directors throughout the State Park system. Come join a team that has been guarding the beach and protecting the public for almost 100 years.  

Beach Directors train lifeguards and assist with administering the Lifeguard Program statewide. This includes conducting waterfront and recertification classes, running in-service trainings and general program assistance.

Positions are 40 hours a week, no set shift. Typical day is managing lifeguards who are on duty 10am-6pm daily. Attendance at recruiting events and lifeguard certification classes during March-May is mandatory.  

Pay rate is: $16.00-18.00/hr. depending on relevant experience. No benefits. 

Length of positions:  March through September.

Selection Plan

These positions are non-competitive. Open to the public.

Selected candidates must have a current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor.

Selected candidates must have a valid driver’s license. Required travel within the state to the different guarded beaches and to statewide training locations.

Experience as a lifeguard and experience in a supervisory role over others is required for this position.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, this class is accountable for training lifeguards and assisting with the administration of the lifeguard program statewide.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Trains lifeguards and assists with administering of the agency’s lifeguard program; conducts waterfront and recertification classes; conducts in-service training activities and general program assistance; travels within the state to different guarded beaches and training locations; may be required to perform a full range of lifeguard services at swimming areas operated by the State; may be required to perform basic lifeguard duties as necessary; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

  1. Applicants must demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques.
  2. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One year (1) of experience as a supervisory over lifeguards.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Preferred applicants will be self-motivated, conscientious, adhere to established policies and procedures, punctual, professional, and communicate efficiently.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Must be at least 20 years old.
  2. Must have a current certification as an American Red Cross Lifeguard instructor.
  3. Must have a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s License.
  4. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
