The State of Connecticut, Department of Correction is recruiting for Correctional Electricians for various correctional facilities statewide. This posting will be used to fill two current vacancies in Enfield and Somers, and may be used for future vacancies at correctional institutions or district crews as they occur.
This position is full time, Monday through Friday, first shift 7:45 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and is entitled to excellent benefits including health, dental and a 25 year hazardous duty retirement. Selected candidates will be required to attend a 12 week hazardous duty training at the Maloney Center for Training & Staff Development located in Cheshire, CT.

In a Department of Correction facility or district this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the repair, monitoring and installation of electrical systems and equipment.
Repairs, maintains and installs electrical systems and equipment such as motors, transformers, generators, wiring, switches, fixtures, circuit breakers, emergency lighting, fire alarms, etc.; determines electrical malfunctions using test instruments such as amp meter, voltmeter and VOM tester and repairs defects by replacing burnt out elements, fuses or wiring and cleaning or re-wiring components; provides instruction and training and maintains custody of and disciplines a group of inmates assigned electrical maintenance duties; instructs inmates in planning, layout and wiring of new installations and making equipment adjustments using hand tools; keeps records and completes necessary reports; evaluates performance of each inmate assigned to work area; maintains discipline and enforces security measures; may physically restrain inmates, quell disturbances and otherwise assist custodial forces in emergencies; may be required to operate a motor vehicle; performs related duties as required.
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, tools and equipment involved in electrical repair and installation work; knowledge of principles and operations of electrical systems; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; considerable ability to analyze quickly and accurately extent and cause of electrical malfunctions and failures; ability to interpret and revise electrical wiring and schematic drawings; ability to plan, layout and schedule maintenance assignments and estimate costs; ability to operate and utilize computerized and automated control systems; ability to maintain records and prepare reports; ability to instruct others in techniques and skills of electrical maintenance work; ability to perform under stress and remain stable in pressure situations; some supervisory ability.
