Introduction

The beautiful, gently sloping, soft sandy beach, picnic areas, train watching, diverse trail systems and salt marsh viewing platforms make the State of Connecticut, Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP) parks ideal for families. Try crabbing or fishing.  Look for ospreys, cranes, and herons or other waterfowl.  CT State Parks provide something for all members of the family.

DEEP's Bureau of Outdoor Recreation, State Parks Division, Lifeguard Program, has multiple opportunities for Lifeguards  throughout the State Park system.

Lifeguards act as primary visitor contact, interacting with the public to assist them in the safe and orderly enjoyment of the Park.  Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers at State of Connecticut State Park Waterfronts; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas; maintains order in swimming areas; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required; instructs patrons in water safety; participates in physical and rescue skills training; performs general maintenance tasks, including beach cleaning, as assigned.

Must be at least 16 years old.  Must have a current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding with the Waterfront Module, or must be able to pass the pre-requisites for that course.

Work Location: Outside at designated swimming areas at various State Parks.

Hours of work: are 10 am to 6 pm, typically five days per week for a total of 40 hours. Weekends and holidays are mandatory.  

Pay rate is: $10.10 - 14.00 per hr depending on relevant experience. No benefits. 

Length of positions:  Memorial Day through Labor Day, 2019.

Selected candidates must be fluent in English and be at least 16 years old. 

Selected candidates must possess and maintain adequate physical flexibility, strength and stamina to perform the duties (including work outside in inclement weather, work outside for extended periods), and work well with other staff and members of the public.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the State of Connecticut this class is accountable for performing a full range of lifeguard services at swimming areas operated by state agencies.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Monitors activities in swimming areas to prevent accidents and provide assistance to swimmers at State of Connecticut beaches, pools, lakes, institutions and hospitals; cautions swimmers regarding unsafe areas; maintains order in swimming areas; rescues swimmers in danger of drowning and administers first aid and/or cardiopulmonary resuscitation as required; instructs clients in water safety; may give swimming instructions; may work with persons with mental retardation and/or other disabilities; lifts persons with disabilities as required; may perform park maintenance tasks; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Applicants must demonstrate competence in basic life-saving techniques. Applicants must be able to demonstrate the ability to swim while carrying an adult to safety.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

All candidates must be able to demonstrate the following:

Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used. This is to be completed in 15 minutes or less.

Tread water for 2 minutes, using only the legs. Candidates should place their hands under their armpits. The head must remain above the surface of the water.

Complete the ‘brick’ timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. (The face may be in or out of the water. Swim goggles are not allowed.) Surface dive, feet-first or head-first, to a depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards to return to the starting point with both hands holding the object and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath. (Candidates should not swim the distance under water.) Exit the water without using a ladder or steps.

Complete the ‘underwater swim’ event by swimming an accumulation of 15 yards underwater, in a single breath, picking up three dive rings.

Candidates must be able to run from to the tower/ chair, into the water, and then swim to the far corner of the back swim line in 30 seconds or less.

Complete a 0.25 mile run in 2 minutes and 30 seconds or less.

Demonstrate proficiency in skill: Rescuing a Passive Victim with a Rescue Board at a waterfront setting. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

Must be able to retrieve a passive victim from the bottom of the shallow end and surface with the victim face up. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

Must be able to jump off and then climb back into a rescue kayak without flipping the kayak. Candidate will have 2 attempts.

Must be able to demonstrate proper CPR for a victim on dry land vs a victim pulled from the water (for those candidate who already possess a current lifeguard certification only).

Attend all class sessions of the lifeguarding course (if not already certified).

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess Certification in the following ; Life-saving from a national accredited organization ( i.e. American Red Cross, YMCA, Ellis & Associates, etc. ), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) for the professional rescuer, and first aid. All certifications must be valid from the beginning to end of working period.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel
