Maintenance Supervisor 2 (General) (37.5 Hour)

The State of Connecticut Department of Transportation (DOT), Office of Property and Facilities Services seeks a qualified individual for the position of Maintenance Supervisor 2 (General) in Trumbull. This position is for first shift, 37.5 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

The position is designed for a candidate who will be spending the majority of their time leading a crew performing highly skilled trade duties in a variety of trade areas and overseeing all the supervisory and administrative facility operations in a defined geographic area.

In a state agency this class is accountable for supervising a large crew (6 or more) of highly-skilled trades workers and lower-level employees.

Schedules, assigns, oversees and reviews the work of staff; provides staff training and assistance; conducts performance evaluations; determines priorities and plans crew work; establishes and maintains crew procedures; develops or makes recommendations on the development of policies and standards; acts as liaison with other operating units, agencies and outside officials regarding unit policies and procedures; prepares reports and correspondence; performs some of the more skilled duties involved; may make plans and cost estimates of work to be done; performs related duties as required.

Considerable knowledge of modern methods and equipment involved in the trade indicated by the parenthetical of the class; considerable knowledge of relevant State and national codes and regulations; considerable interpersonal skills; considerable oral and written communication skills; skill in performing technical duties of the class; considerable ability to read and interpret specifications, blueprints, and sketches; ability to utilize computer software; supervisory ability.

Six (6) years of experience in the maintenance and repair of buildings.

Note: Experience performing technical duties within the maintenance trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the General Experience on a year for year basis.

Four (4) years of the General Experience must have included performing skilled tasks in either the maintenance and repair of buildings or the military experience referenced above.

Note: For State Employees the Special Experience is interpreted at or above the level of Skilled Maintainer.

Candidates are required to possess considerable documented knowledge of materials, methods, and practices in a variety of trade areas. The candidate will be expected to know and apply standard trade practices in a variety of trade areas including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, HVACR, masonry, and painting. The preferred candidate will have an in depth knowledge of building automation systems and documented experience in adjusting and controlling HVAC points; a background in supervising multi-site building operations over a very wide area; documented experience in working with outside contractors for various services; and experience in sprinkler system testing and inspections.

2. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

At State Airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

2. A physical examination may be required.

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and to risk of injury from equipment.

The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
