The State of Connecticut, Department of Transportation, has a position available for a Transportation Planner 1 within the Bureau of Policy and Planning’s Roadway Information System’s Traffic Monitoring Section.
The Traffic Monitoring Section is responsible for the collection, analysis and dissemination of roadway traffic data including vehicle volumes, classifications, travel speeds and truck weigh-in-motion. The needs for traffic data at both the Federal and State levels require that States have a well-designed traffic monitoring program to support all business areas. Traffic data and information are needed to assess current and past roadway network performance and to predict future performance. Improved traffic data are needed for capital project support and for Federal reporting purposes.
This position will work under the direction of a Transportation Planner 2 or an employee of a higher grade, assisting with the proper maintenance, setup, and calibration of traffic monitoring portable and automated data collection equipment. This position will be responsible for independently planning, collecting, analyzing and assisting with the dissemination of portable and continuous traffic volume counts, vehicle classification and speeds, and weigh-in-motion.

• Collects and analyzes, and presents traffic data for use in surveys related to safety, environmental studies, land use, suburban and urban population changes and transportation needs.
• Conducts planning studies relative to all transportation modes for the movement of people and goods.
• Assists with the development, coordination and evaluation transportation programs.
• Collects, analyzes and updates traffic volume, classification, and weigh-in-motion data related to impacts of transportation facilities, projects and programs and makes recommendations based on this analysis.
• Performs trend, economic and environmental analyses of transportation related data.
• Prepares statistical and written reports reviews studies, surveys and technical documents for conformance with department standards, needs and state and federal laws and regulations.
• Provides planning assistance and coordinates activities and projects with local, regional, state, and federal agencies, private consultants and stakeholders.
• Reviews proposed legislation and distributes information.
• Assists in preparation and review of traffic projections for multimodal state corridor studies, design projects and proposed major traffic generators.
• Assists in data collection, report generation and analysis related to Highway Performance Monitoring System Program.
