Introduction

The State of Connecticut Department of Correction has a position available located inside Carl Robinson Correctional Institution. This is a full-time position (37.50 hours per week) , Monday thru Friday, First Shift. It will require the ability to lift moderately heavy weight (up to 50 lbs.).

Background checks and drug test will be conducted.

*The entry level rate for this class will be ten (10%) percent below Step 1 of the salary grade. Upon completion of the initial working test period the incumbent's salary will be adjusted to the TC pay plan, Step 1 of the salary grade for this class.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks in the receipt, processing and distribution of mail.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Sorts, distributes and routes incoming and interoffice mail; operates automatic postage application equipment, mail inserters, and weight scales; weighs and stamps postaged, franked or metered mail; drives state vehicles in the delivery of United States and interagency mail; picks up and delivers mail at United States Post Offices; signs for insured, certified, registered and special delivery mail; updates and maintains records; may maintain daily cash records; schedules vehicle maintenance; provides postal service assistance to customers; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of U.S. Postal Service regulations, rates and classes of mail; some oral and written communication skills; some interpersonal skills; ability to follow oral and written instructions; ability to perform basic arithmetic computations; ability to utilize computer software; ability to operate computerized and mechanical postal processing equipment; some mechanical ability.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of experience in a mail service or postal operation involving the operation and maintenance of mail service equipment.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates with experience in a large volume mailroom setting with at least 1,500 pieces of mail a day and experience in reviewing and processing mail. Good communication, dexterity, stamina and organizational skills. Candidates with knowledge in maintenance and repair of equipment, postage meters and sorting machines will be given preference.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.
2. A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weight.
