Transportation Landscape Designer 1 (40 Hour)

Introduction

The Connecticut Department of Transportation is accepting applications for the position of Transportation Landscape Designer 1, in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction, Division of Highway Design, in Newington. This position is full time, 40 hours per week and is in the P-4 (Engineering and Scientific) bargaining unit. This position is accountable for the design of landscape projects for the Department of Transportation.

Duties include: developing CADD generated landscape plans, specifications, and cost estimates for transportation projects currently in design; preparing the landscape design components for highway safety improvement and enhancement projects as part of an inter-disciplinary team; reviewing landscape plans designed by others; preparing communicative graphics; performing material testing; overseeing the installation of vegetation on many types of transportation improvement projects and advising district personnel and engineers in the interpretation of landscape plans and specifications.

Interviews will be limited to candidates whose experience and training most closely meet the requirements of the position.  The candidate pool resulting from this posting may be used to fill Transportation Landscape Designer 1 vacancies that occur in the Bureau of Engineering and Construction in Newington in the next twelve (12) months.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Transportation, this class is accountable for providing landscape maintenance, permit review and inspection and the investigation of complaints relative to landscaping issues within rights of way.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs a limited range of related duties in investigating complaints and recommending remedial action; identifies existing vegetation and makes recommendations for salvage and/or preservation; performs site inspections of plant materials, supplies and contract execution to insure conformance to plans and specifications; conducts tree surveys to determine the condition of the trees and makes appropriate recommendations for pruning, planting and tree removal; maintains records of materials; advises district personnel and engineers in the interpretation of landscape plans and specifications; may prepare plans for small design projects; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of principles and practices of landscape architecture; knowledge of soils, horticulture, planting, seeding and landscape materials; skill in use of drafting and calculating equipment; interpersonal skills; ability to apply basic landscape architectural principles and practices in planning and design of landscape projects; ability to keep records and make reports; ability to prepare and interpret specifications; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Four (4) years of experience in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science or forestry.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in landscape architectural design, horticulture, plant science or forestry may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Considerable oral and written communication skills, a strong work ethic, and interest in transportation project design work. 

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.
