Introduction

UConn’s Facilities Operations Department is seeking two Electronic Integrated Control Systems Technicians – Industrial Controls (EICS Tech - IC), who can work independently performing a full range of tasks involved in monitoring, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing and programming automated control systems for industrial production process controls which are, but not limited to, electronic, electromechanical and/or pneumatic transmitter and metering instrumentation devices used to control various production process outputs in a power or wastewater facility and to regulate process outputs associated with water, natural gas or other utilities and medical support systems.

The EICS Tech (IC) is expected to have and obtain knowledge of industrial electronics basic concepts, which are then applicable to all the various utility services of the University of Connecticut. These positions will be assigned primarily to the UCONN Storrs Campus, its facilities and buildings, but may support the other UCONN Campuses on an as required basis. These positions will be focused on monitoring, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing and programming automated control systems and conservation of utility services demand side and as required support of utility services generation side. One position will report to the Energy and Compliance Manager and will perform tasks related to metering equipment located in any/all campus buildings and the other position will report to the Power Plant Supervisor and will perform tasks on equipment located in the Co-Gen Facility.  Please note that either position may be required to support the other during outages and/or periods of high work activity.

These are permanent, full-time positions, Monday – Friday, 40 hours/week with on call responsibilities for other work shifts, holidays and weekends.  The work hours are 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (30 minute unpaid lunch).  Hourly salary is $28.28 and is non-negotiable.  These positions are categorized as Emergency Support Services/Essential Staff.  Must be willing and able to work during emergency closures/delayed openings due to inclement weather or for significant events that effect campus operations. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

At the University of Connecticut and the University of Connecticut Health Center this class is accountable for independently performing a full range of tasks involved in monitoring, maintaining, diagnosing, repairing and programming automated control systems for industrial production process controls which are, but not limited to, electronic, electromechanical and/or pneumatic transmitter and metering instrumentation devices used to control various production process outputs in a power or wastewater facility and to regulate process outputs associated with water, natural gas or other utilities and medical support systems.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Performs routine electronic or electromechanical transmitter and metering instrumentation calibration using specialized electronic devices for such plant equipment as boilers, gas turbines, heat recovery steam generators, ozone generators, chilled water controls, uninterruptible power supply and emission control system to ensure accuracy of data transmission to distributed control system; diagnoses malfunctions in transmitter and metering instrumentation controls to detect causes for improper pressure, current, voltage, level, damper control, suction and supply on pumps, flow and gas control; diagnoses and replaces input or output circuit cards and modules within programmable logic controls; reloads programmable logic controller; rewires programmable logic controller as necessary; assists vendor with new instrumentation installation; programs logic controllers using vendor software language; orders parts and maintains electronic equipment spare part inventory; performs repairs on pumps, draws schematic diagrams using CAD software for documentation; writes work procedures; maintains records on calibration and maintenance; may perform retrofit or upgrade to existing instruments; may perform limited duties related to building subsystems; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Considerable knowledge of electrical schematics; considerable knowledge of network troubleshooting; considerable knowledge of electronic instrumentation calibration; considerable knowledge of electronic theories and practices to one or more complex systems which integrate into a total system; considerable knowledge of applicable industrial plant equipment and process; knowledge of functions and processes of assigned facility of employment; knowledge of Building Automation and Control network (BACnet); knowledge of Boolean logic; interpersonal skills; oral and written communication skills; considerable ability to diagnose, repair and maintain electronic instrumentation and related parts; ability to utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Five (5) years of experience in installation assistance, monitoring, instrumentation calibration, maintenance, repair and programming of electronic industrial controls which are integrated to a distributed control system (DCS) within an industrial, commercial, military, government, large healthcare complex or a production oriented environment.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

A maximum of two (2) years may be substituted for the following:
1. Graduation from a two (2) year vocational or technical school designating completion of subject requirements in electronic integrated systems/maintenance technology or related field may be substituted for two (2) years of the General Experience.
2. College training in electronics or electrical/mechanical engineering or a related field may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equaling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of two (2) years.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

American Society for Quality (ASQ) – Certified Calibration Technician (CCT); Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I) - Industrial Electronics Technician (IND) Certification; Electronics Technicians Association, International (ETA-I) – Associate  Electronics Technician (CETa) Certification; International Society of Automation (ISA) – Certified Control Systems Technician Level I (CCST-I); International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) - Certified Electronics Technician Journeyman Level Industrial or Certified Electronics Technician Associate Level.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate valid current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to attend technical seminars or courses and retain original equipment manufacturer certification.
3. Incumbents in this class may be required to travel.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, heights, confined spaces, extreme weather and/or environmental conditions, significant levels of extreme heat, noise and particulates and may be required to use protective equipment.
