Laboratory Assistant 2 (40 Hour)

Introduction

The Department of Emergency Services and Public Protection (DESPP) is currently recruiting for a Laboratory Assistant 2 position located in the Division of Scientific Services - Case Management Unit in Meriden. This is a full time, Monday - Friday, 40 hour per week position.  The Case Management Unit's goal is to act as the primary conduit between submitting agencies and the Forensic Science Examiners.  The Case Management Unit communicates with the submitting agencies for additional information or samples to complete analysis on the cases.  This Unit is also in communication with the State's Attorney's Offices regarding cases requiring expedited casework, pending trails or dispositions and Discovery/FOIA requests.  The Case Management Unit coordinates the flow of casework to the Forensic Biology/DNA Unit and other Units in the Division of Scientific Services. Duties to be performed include but not limited to preparing sample preparation for nuclear DNA analysis; examine submitted evidence, complete a written description, photographs evidence, collect and preserve samples for further analysis, assist in reagent preparation; handle evidentiary materials and samples before and after analysis to maintain for safekeeping, evidence transfer and database transactions, maintain chain of custody; compile and prepares Discoveries/FOIA documents.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state health, academic or diagnostic laboratory, this class is accountable for performing routine technical laboratory work with an emphasis on the preparation of simple as well as moderately complex solutions, stains, culture media and/or reagents, specimens/samples for analysis using simple as well as more advanced techniques and performance of routine technical examinations according to prescribed procedures.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Prepares simple as well as moderately complex solutions, stains, culture media and/or reagents; prepares specimens/samples for analysis using simple as well as slightly more advanced techniques; assists in or performs routine technical tests and examinations according to prescribed procedures; prepares reports and maintains records of laboratory findings; may assist in training lower level laboratory employees in preparatory techniques and checking work for conformity with required procedures; performs related duties as required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY

Knowledge of laboratory equipment, procedures, techniques and terminology; ability to carry out written and oral instructions; ability to perform calculations according to prescribed procedures, keep technical records and prepare reports.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE

Two (2) years' experience in related laboratory work.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SPECIAL EXPERIENCE

One (1) year of the General Experience must have been at the level of Laboratory Assistant 1 or above.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED

College training in the biological or physical sciences may be substituted for the General Experience on the basis of fifteen (15) semester hours equalling one-half (1/2) year of experience to a maximum of four (4) years for a Bachelor's degree.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ability to work in a high paced environment, strong interpersonal, written and verbal communications skills;  experience in performing evidence receiving of forensic casework, processing and cataloguing evidence using a chain of custody is preferred.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must be willing to undergo periodic tests or immunizations for communicable diseases as necessary.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may occasionally be required to lift standard laboratory equipment, supplies and/or bodies; may be exposed to some risk of injury from such elements as toxic vapors and toxic and/or disease carrying substances; may be exposed to moderately disagreeable conditions.
