Introduction
The State of Connecticut Department of Education is recruiting within the agency for an Education Staff Assistant position. As the SDE moves into year 3 of the State Board of Education’s 5 Year Comprehensive Plan, it is critical for the agency to have an individual who will monitor the delivery of the goals outlined by the State Board, in concert with the coordinated monitoring of the State Department of Education’s approved plan under the Federal Every Student Succeeds Act. This individual will also ensure that all policy initiatives being proposed by the Department and/or State Board will be in accordance with fulfilling the objectives outlined in each plan and will continue to advocate for those policies before the Legislature and other interested stakeholders. In addition, this individual will analyze State Statutes as they pertain to agency matters and provide feedback to the Commissioner and agency leadership to advocate for change. This position is located at 450 Columbus Blvd., Hartford and is a 12-month position, 40 hours per week, Monday – Friday, 8:30 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This position may be required to travel.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Education assists the Secretary, State Board of Education, in the performance of special assignments in matters pertaining to educational policy and other State Board responsibilities.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Acts as an executive assistant to the Secretary, State Board of Education; prepares policy materials for presentation to the State Board of Education; may work with representatives of the State, Federal, Local and Legislative agencies on educational matters; prepares reports on matters of concern to the State Board of Education as required; participates in the planning of educational goals and strategies; coordinates the dissemination of information to interested parties; assists in the organization and staffing of units of the Department; may assist in developing the State Board of Education agenda; performs research projects as directed; does related duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of the basic philosophy of education; knowledge of organizational behavior and planning; ability to plan educational policy; ability to prepare comprehensive reports; ability to develop and maintain cooperative working relationships; administrative ability; considerable skill in oral and written expression.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Demonstrated competence to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position as determined by the State Board of Education.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred candidates will possess:
- Bachelor’s Degree;
- Minimum of five (5) years of experience advocating for policy issues before the Legislature;
- Experience in drafting legislative proposals;
- Familiarity with the State Board of Education’s 5-year Comprehensive Plan and ESSA Plan;
- Knowledge of procedures and rules regarding Board meetings;
- Experience in presenting items before Boards of Education;
- Strong oral and written communication skills;
- Ability to provide writing samples if selected for an interview.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
Must hold an appropriate certificate issued by the State Board of Education.
