The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is seeking a qualified individual to join our team as a State School Teacher (PCN 127719) at Whiting Forensic Hospital (WFH), a maximum security forensic psychiatric hospital. This integral position helps support students with disabilities and in Special Education who have not graduate by the time they are admitted in our care. This is a hazardous duty position. - Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, and follows the Unified School District #2 calendar
- Work Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week
- Work Shift: First shift, 8:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.

The individual in this position must possess the (#165) Comprehensive Special Education, K–12 teaching certificate from the Connecticut State Board of Education.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:
- Utilizing your teaching skills to create and implement IEP's for Special Education students ages 18-22
- Providing education, lectures and instruction to enhance the ability of the patients to re-enter the community
- Responsible for English as a Second Language (ESL), GED prep/adult education, college courses/correspondence courses
- Help in the creation of a Health Disparity Project for WFH in support of accreditation with the Joint Commission
- Proctoring exams as needed

Whiting Forensic Hospital specializes in providing inpatient services to individuals involved in the criminal justice system. The hospital consists of 91 maximum security beds and 138 enhanced security beds. Services are provided to individuals who are admitted under the following categories: Psychiatric Security Review Board commitment, Criminal court order for restoration of competency to stand trial, Civil commitment (voluntary or involuntary) and Transfer from the Department of Correction (during period of incarceration or at end of sentence). Discharge options are dependent on legal status and the purpose of admission.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In a state institution, facility or region within a state unified school district, teaches appropriate early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subjects and/or special education curricula to individuals enrolled in departmental education programs.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Teaches early intervention, elementary, secondary, special subject and/or special education curricula; develops educational plans for individuals and groups material level to students ability; sets short and long term goals and evaluates progress of students; participates in planning team meetings and case review conferences assessing student behavior; may hold conferences with parents or officials concerned with student's performance; relates to professionals in ancillary educational roles; maintains student records and writes reports; performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
Knowledge of the philosophy and methods of education and teaching; knowledge of the principles and practices of education for special needs population; knowledge of student program needs and goal setting; ability to motivate students; ability to communicate at the appropriate level; ability to establish cooperative relationships with those contacted in work; ability to prepare written reports.
Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college.
- Possession of the (#088) English to Non-English Speaking Adults teaching certificate by the Connecticut State Board of Education
- Possession of the (#106) High School Credit Diploma Program teaching certificate by the Connecticut State Board of Education
- Possession of the (#107) External Diploma Program and Noncredit Mandated Programs teaching certificate by the Connecticut State Board of Education
- Possession of a Master's Degree
- Experience working inside of a locked setting
- Experience with psychiatric illness
1. Employment in this class is conditional upon possession of a valid Connecticut State Board of Education teaching certificate appropriate to the teaching assignment.
2. Incumbents in this class may be required to possess and retain a current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator's license.
