DESCRIPTION
DEFINITION
Under supervision, to drive a bookmobile, to perform related library clerical duties with extensive public service and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Incumbents in the class of Bookmobile Driver-Clerk load and unload library materials and drive the Library Bookmobile to neighborhoods, elementary schools the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin and other locations throughout Alameda County. They perform clerical duties with extensive public contact in conjunction with the completion of their job tasks. Incumbents in this classification are distinguished from Library Driver-Clerk in that incumbents in the latter classification drive a delivery van and load and unload heavy, bulky supplies, equipment and furniture.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1. Safely drives the bookmobile to predetermined locations.
2. Checks out library materials, shelves books, issues library cards, answers library procedural questions, collects fines and fees for overdue items or lost and damage items deals courteously with a wide variety of library patrons, operates the Bookmobile laptop computer and office terminal and performs other clerical duties in the office as needed.
3. Loads and unloads library materials and supplies on the bookmobile as required.
4. Checks the gas, oil, water and general mechanical condition of vehicle daily, arrange vehicle repair and maintenance with the General Services Agency for which she/he is responsible, reports vehicle safety problems to librarian and county repair yard and maintains a repair log.
5. Checks library materials in and out using current technology.
6. Registers patrons utilizing a library computer system.
7. Investigates and resolves patron inquiries and concerns relating to circulation records.
8. Handles financial transactions using library computer.
9. Shelves library materials according to an alpha, numerical or date order.
10. Processes new library materials and mends library materials.
11. Performs routine clerical tasks, such as typing and filing, search and retrieval of information on a data base system, and related clerical tasks using a library automated system.
12. Answers telephones and handles or routes calls as appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
The equivalent of six months’ full-time clerical experience that included extensive public contact and the equivalent of 6 months’ recent full-time experience driving a vehicle of at least 18,000 pound gross vehicle weight (G.V.W.) capacity.

License:

All candidates must possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license and a good driving record.

Special Requirements:

1. Possession of a Class B driver's license with air brake certification.
2. Federal law and County policy requires that positions in the class of Bookmobile Driver-Clerk are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.
3. Successful completion of a thorough background investigation by the Department of Justice.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
