DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, responds to fire alarms and other emergency (or non-emergency) calls involving the suppression, extinguishment, and prevention of fires (structural and wildlands); protects life, property, and environment, including rescue and salvage operations and mitigation of hazardous materials incidents; cleans, maintains and repairs (when possible) fire station property and environment; trains and drills for emergency preparedness; uses computers to log calls, log training data, and communicates with co-workers, supervisors, and the public; and performs other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a safety classification within the Alameda County Fire Department (ACFD). This classification is distinguished from the classification of Firefighter in that the Firefighter Lateral – EMT requires the successful completion of the ACFD Lateral Firefighter Academy to flexibly promote to the Firefighter classification. It is also distinguished from the lower classifications of Firefighter Recruit - EMT and Firefighter Recruit - Paramedic, as the latter classifications are required to successfully complete the Alameda County Firefighter Recruit Training Program to flexibly promote to the Firefighter classification.

Upon successful completion of the training requirements, incumbents are expected to promote to the classification of Firefighter. Incumbents will serve a combined probationary period of fourteen (14) months in the Firefighter Lateral - EMT and Firefighter classifications.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are typical duties performed by employees in this classification. Employees may not necessarily perform all duties listed, however, they may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.

Attends the assigned ACFD Lateral Firefighter Academy by participating in classroom training manipulative exercises, and drills.
Undergoes classroom training and manipulative exercises and drills to develop an awareness of the functions and responsibilities of an ACFD Firefighter and how they relate to firefighting operations.
Studies and completes homework assignments.
Successfully achieves a passing score on all required periodic quizzes and examinations.
Satisfactorily completes other training as assigned by ACFD ,before being promoted to a line Firefighter, such as maintaining the fire station and equipment, and participating in drills and training classes to assure proper state of emergency readiness.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education:

Graduation from high school, possession of an acceptable equivalency certificate, such as the General Educational Development Certificate (State of California), or any higher-level degree from an accredited college or university.

AND

Experience:

Currently employed as a Firefighter and have the The equivalent of two (2) years of professional full-time experience working as a firefighter in a municipal fire agency and/ or fire district.

Substitution:

Two (2) seasons of professional firefighting experience with a seasonal fire agency may be substituted for one (1) year of the required experience.

License:

1. Valid California Emergency Medical Technician (EMT or AEMT) Certificate or California Paramedic License; active and unrestricted by the last day for filing of the application.

National Registry EMT (NREMT) and California EMT (within 90-calendar days after receipt of a conditional job offer); or
California Paramedic License; or
National Registry Paramedic (NRP) and California EMT License (within 90-calendar days after receipt of a conditional job offer).

2. Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

3. State Fire Marshall Certification:

Firefighter 1

Special Requirements:

1. Ability to successfully pass a thorough background investigation, medical examination (NFPA 1582), and psychological examinations.

2. Must be eligible to obtain a Department of Energy security clearance (requires U.S. citizenship).

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the "Examples of Duties" section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

Basic building construction, fire chemistry, physics, and automotive mechanics.
Common office practices, including copying, typing, and basic computer operations.

Use radio communications equipment and speak clearly.
Remain calm and work effectively in stressful situations.

Reference and utilize training materials (manuals, fire codes, journals, etc.).
