DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to plan, organize, supervise and inspect the work of Janitors; to instruct and train subordinates and evaluate their performance; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Janitor Supervisor I represents the first level of full supervision in the janitorial class series. Members of this class are full-time supervisors and do not normally perform janitorial work. The class of Janitor Supervisor I is distinguished from the class of Lead Janitor in that the latter class does not have full supervisory responsibility and performs janitorial work in addition to directing, prioritizing, coordinating, assigning and reviewing the work of Janitors. The class of Janitor Supervisor I is distinguished from the class of Janitor Supervisor II in that the latter class has a greater scope of responsibility. Specifically, the class of Janitor Supervisor II has janitorial management responsibility for either a facility that has a janitorial staff on duty 24 hours a day, 7 days a week or a complex of buildings that exceeds 500,000 square feet.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.


1. Supervises, schedules, assigns and inspects the work of Janitors and Custodians. May supervise the work of Lead Janitors.

2. Inspects buildings regularly to ensure clean buildings; takes appropriate actions so that deficiencies may be remedied.

3. Instructs and trains subordinate employees and evaluates their performance.

4. Maintains electronic and paper records.

5. Maintains supply inventories and issues supplies and equipment.

6. Maintains a calendar of events to ensure that rooms are set up for special events, trials, conferences and departmental meetings.

7. Inspects the work of contractors performing special tasks such as window washing.

8. Recommends personnel actions.

9. Maintains effective relationships with building representatives.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Either I

The equivalent of one year of experience as a Janitor Supervisor I or the equivalent of two years of experience as a Lead Janitor or in an equivalent or higher level building maintenance class in the Alameda County classified service. (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Completion of the Alameda County Management Academy “Management and Supervision Certificate Program” may substitute for six (6) months of the required qualifying experience.

Or II

The equivalent of four years of full-time janitorial experience, two years of which must have included supervising and administering a housekeeping program.

License:

Possession of a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator’s license.

Special Requirements:

Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance from Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

Must be available, by phone, after hours, weekends, and holidays for emergency purposes.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
