DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, to provide a variety of services to welfare clients; to act as liaison between the client, the Social Services Agency, and community services agencies; and to do related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Welfare Services Aides perform a wide range of client services without close supervision. They assist social workers by performing sub-professional duties involving child care, homemaking, and family budgeting. They may also counsel clients on special problems.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Helps clients establish and maintain eligibility by assisting them in the completion of forms.
2. Provides child care or transportation for clients who are seeking housing, employment, or vocational training.
3. Provides information to clients about welfare department rules and regulations.
4. Provides counseling to clients on matters of child care, money management, nutrition, homemaking, and vocational training.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I
Experience:

The equivalent of three months of experience as a Welfare Services Aide Trainee or completion of a comparable or equivalent training program approved by the Alameda County Social Services Agency.

Or II

The equivalent of six months of volunteer or paid experience working with the public providing supportive services which included translation/interpretation.

Or III

Some acceptable combination of education and similar experience.

License:

Certain positions require incumbents to possess a valid California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS

Knowledge of:

• Public assistance rules and regulations and special problems of persons receiving public assistance.

Abilities:

• Reading and writing English.
• Working effectively with persons in crisis situations or in need.
• Working well with other staff members.
• Following oral instructions.
