Under direction, to administer a dental care program; to assist in the administrative and professional direction of the dental services within the County; to provide professional dental services in a County hospital and clinic; and to do related work as required.


The Staff Dentist is primarily responsible for the total dental care of the patients of Alameda County Medical Center. The incumbent performs all appropriate dental procedures and serves as a consultant in dentistry for hospital patients with medico-dental problems.

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Plans and directs dental services and dental health programs for the Alameda County Medical Center; provides professional dental care for hospital and clinic patients; performs oral examinations and evaluations, using X-Ray and other special equipment required; performs restorations, prophylactic procedures and some oral surgery; treats mouth diseases; takes impressions, orders dentures and fits and adjusts dentures.

2. Develops and uses specialized dental techniques for bedridden hospital and clinic patients at the Alameda County Medical Center; may perform emergency oral surgery and dental procedures on patients in order to reduce or eliminate pain.

3. Instructs patients, nurses, nurses aides, and dental assistants in oral hygiene, dental care, and dental procedures; acts as a consultant on hospital patients; participates in medical staff meetings.

4. Acts as a resource person in providing information to County Departments on dentistry and on the scope and degree of dental service the County can provide; assists in deciding the priority of dental care for various groups of patients and in the distribution of County funds for dental care.


Possession of a valid license to practice dentistry in California,



The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience in the practice of dentistry.

Knowledge of:

· Principles and practices of modern dentistry and oral surgery.
· Hospital and clinic dental programs.


· Planning and conducting a dental service and health program for hospital and clinic patients.
· Instructing patients and members of the hospital staff in oral hygiene and dental care.
· Maintaining effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and other personnel.
