Under general direction, the class of Senior Land Surveyor is the first-line supervisor of either the Survey Support Section of the Capital Improvement Program or the County Survey Section being responsible for both the office and required field survey work; and performs other related duties.
The class of Senior Land Surveyor is distinguished from the next lower one of Land Surveyor in that the former class is a first-line supervisor, while the latter class functions as the senior member on a survey team or acts as lead over units within different sections of the Survey Section. This class is further distinguished from the next higher one of County Surveyor in that the latter class is a second-line supervisor having overall responsibility for the Survey Section in the Public Works Agency.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.
1. Assigns and schedules survey parties and staff assistants; trains survey parties and staff assistants in the use of contemporary methods and equipment.
2. Assists in the hiring and evaluation of personnel and recommends disciplinary action; acts for the County Surveyor in the incumbent's absence.
3. Selects the methods, procedures and accuracies of field work; determines calculation and adjustment methods.
4. Specifies the format and information to be shown on maps and documents; reviews the accuracy of the work product.
5. Assists in survey equipment evaluations; drafts specifications and justifications for input into the budget process.
6. Clarifies and approves the scope of work for Survey Requests by meeting with the design engineers, architects, environmentalists, real estate agents, and other allied professionals to determine final requirements.
7. Prepares job specifications for consultant land surveyor's work products by determining appropriate costs for service, reviewing in-progress work products for adherence to acceptable standards, and approving invoices for payment, when completed.
8. Coordinates construction staking requirements with contractors for Capital Improvement Program (C.I.P.) projects.
9. Prepares formal survey contracts with consultants for on-call professional and technical surveying services.
10. Evaluates the work of survey consultants for satisfactory completion, and approves invoices for payment, when completed.
11. Researches and analyzes prior survey information for suitability with the new survey requests.
12. Reviews and approves specifications necessary prior to ordering surveying instruments.
13. Reviews the Section's survey work for completeness and accuracy.
14. Supervises the preparation of state mandated "Records of Survey" and "Corner Records"; and when completed, endorses same for compliance with the Land Surveyors' Act.
15. Manages and supervises an ongoing training program for county survey staff to become more efficient in the use of contemporary survey equipment in the field, and computer applications in the office.
16. Supervises the preparation and updating of the various survey procedural handbooks and guides.
The equivalent of two years’ full-time experience in the class of Land Surveyor in the Alameda County classified service.
The equivalent of six years of full-time experience in land survey work of which two years must have included supervisory experience managing the work of professional and technical staff.
Must possess a valid certificate of registration as a Land Surveyor, or a Civil Engineer authorized to practice Land Surveying, as issued by the State of California.
Must possess a valid Class C California Motor Vehicle Operator's license.
A Bachelor's degree in Land Surveying/Engineering or Math is considered desirable.
NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

· Contemporary principles, practices, methods and equipment pertinent to land surveying.
