DESCRIPTION

Under general supervision, Infrastructure Services Analysts provide project support for enterprise wide systems projects, and monitor technologies in the areas of networks, servers and support services, in the design, implementation and maintenance of enterprise class systems. Infrastructure Services Analysts may lead (direct, prioritize, coordinate, and review the work of) lower level infrastructure staff, and may be responsible for networking technologies, server, telephony technologies, Cloud-based services, middleware and database technologies, mainframe, security, workstation, laptop and mobile technologies; and perform other related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

The class of Infrastructure Services Analyst is the journey level class in the multi-disciplinary, professional Infrastructure Engineering series, located in the Information Technology Department. Incumbents in this classification are responsible for leading lower level staff, analyzing information and assisting with the design, support and maintenance of a portion of an enterprise production system, and projects within those systems.

This class is distinguished from the Infrastructure Services Technician by the complexity of technical issues assigned and the analytical skill required to perform assigned duties. This class is further distinguished from the Senior Infrastructure Services Analyst by the complexity of projects assigned and systems supported as well as the latter’s responsibility to function as a supervisor.

Furthermore, the Infrastructure Services Analyst class is distinguished from the countywide Technical Support Analyst in that the former provides multi-departmental enterprise support, and works on enterprise countywide projects, while the latter works solely in support of the county department/agency to which assigned.

Server Services Track

Incumbents in the Server Services discipline are typically responsible for evaluating, designing, implementing and supporting server and storage based solutions, which requires a strong understanding of Cloud-based solutions, Microsoft BackOffice offerings and server technologies.

Network Services Track

Incumbents in the Network Services discipline are typically responsible for Cisco and other networking technologies, and working with other engineers in designing, deploying, and maintaining countywide network infrastructure in alignment with business initiatives.

Security Services Track

Incumbents in the Security Services discipline are typically responsible for key security areas such as risk analysis, policy creation and auditing, and creating Information Security programs, such as; vulnerability management, incident management, breach management and security awareness. Incumbents in this discipline must possess knowledge of security best practices pertaining to network, server, database, web services, identity management and access management.

Support Services Track

Incumbents in the Support Services discipline are typically responsible for planning, configuring, installing, troubleshooting and supporting multiple desktop and mobile solutions, and other enterprise class systems in support of multiple departments/agencies within the county; incumbents provide consultation to multiple departments’ support staff and management on hardware and software issues, and play an essential role in the development and implementation of countywide technical projects.

Telephony Services Track

Incumbents in the Telephony Services discipline are typically responsible for designing and implementing countywide telephony systems, which include; County voice infrastructure (VoIP) on a converged network, managing systems, services and platforms which include Avaya, AVST Unified Messaging, AT&T facilities, and adjunct voice systems.

Mainframe Services Track

Incumbents in the Mainframe Services discipline are typically responsible for supporting ZBC12 and Z/OS platform running CICS and DB2, associated vendor utilities, along with in-house utilities. Vendor packages include IBM, CA, ASG, and BMC. Incumbents assigned to this discipline are responsible for defining project requirements, systems applications and system design, developing project strategy, project planning, and defining infrastructure requirements.

Middleware Services Track

Incumbents in the Middleware Services discipline are typically responsible for coordinating and communicating with developers throughout the delivery of projects. Incumbents may also be responsible for installing and maintaining software, coding programs and developing/deploying web applications. Incumbents establish standards and mentor other staff using best business practices, and partner with technical groups to maintain 24/7 high-availability for middleware applications.

Database Services Track

Incumbents in the Database Services discipline are typically responsible for configuring, installing and maintaining databases on Cloud, Windows, UNIX and Mainframe environments; advising on database best practices, troubleshooting and developing solutions to optimize system performance and scalability; developing backup and disaster recovery processes to ensure availability of databases, and developing and implementing strategy for database security, maintenance and support.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

1. Supports higher level infrastructure staff with ongoing countywide project management activities; may serve as a lead over smaller projects.

2. Participates in, and may lead, the high level technical configuration and incident troubleshooting of systems.

3. Participates in, and may lead, the plans and activities around maintenance best practices and systems optimization.

4. Confers with Engineers and representatives from County departments/agencies to analyze departmental business requirements.

5. Assists with the daily maintenance of select production systems within network, server and office technologies, including but not limited to implementing security patches and updates, reviewing logs, defining disaster recovery schedules, monitoring up-time of services.

6. Participates in, and may develop initiatives contributing to an innovative and strategically aligned team.

7. Creates and maintains system procedural and technical documentation.

8. Assists with the planning, recommendation, and implementation of changes to operating system platforms, system hardware and related technologies in support of organizational goals.

9. Identifies and implements opportunities to improve processing and maintenance efficiency.

10. Provides support and assists in training lower level staff.

11. May act in a lead role to lower level staff.

12. May attend trainings, seminars, and programs to remain current on IT industry trends.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I

Experience:

The equivalent of one year of full-time experience in the class of Infrastructure Services Technician in the Alameda County classified service.

Or II

Experience:

The equivalent of two years of full-time increasingly responsible infrastructure experience, such as security, design and implementation of enterprise network and/or servers, documentation planning and project management in network, server, middleware, telephony and/or desktop technologies. (Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of experience.)
