Under general supervision, to assist with various aspects of an election cycle; performs support activities associated with the preparation for and conduct of elections; and related duties as required.


This classification of Election Worker II – Services-As-Needed is located in the Alameda County Registrar of Voters department and is responsible for providing election support duties in an effort to successfully complete election functions. Incumbents may be asked to perform several types of election duties that consist of serving as a Captain, Assistant Captain, or Election Worker at a specified vote center. This classification will be expected to work up to eleven (11) days supporting the county election functions.

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each individual in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

When performing the duties of a Captain:

  1. Assigns Elections Worker duties.
  2. Serves as the lead position at the Vote Centers.
  3. Oversees procedures for processing voter ballots.
  4. Assigns other Election Workers’ tasks at Vote Centers locations using ‘The Guide.’
  5. Contacts the Vote Center’s keyholder for entry.
  6. Partially sets up the Vote Center on the Friday before Election Day.

When performing the duties of an Assistant Captain:

  1. Assigns Elections Worker duties.
  2. Acts as a Captain in the absence of the Captain.
  3. Assists the Captain of the Vote Center and leads the Vote Center while the Captain is on lunch or break.

When performing duties of an Election Worker:

  1. Completes tasks assigned by the Captain or Assistant Captain, including participating as a greeter, directing voters to appropriate service stations, and provides voter assistance.
  2. Verifies voter’s name on the poll pad and checks in voter.
  3. Issues ballots to voters and instructs voters on how to correctly mark ballots.
  4. Explains where to vote and cast ballots.
  5. Assists voters using voting equipment.
  6. Sets up voting equipment and ballot printers daily.
  7. Prepares simple records, such as logs of Vote Center activities.
  8. Reconciles and secures all used and unused ballots and all election-related materials and equipment. 
  9. Sets-up and takes-down equipment, materials, and signage at voting locations; Opens and/or closes assigned Vote Centers.

Possession of the required knowledge and abilities listed below is proof of sufficient education and experience for this class.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.
