DESCRIPTION
Under general supervision, act as a lead; and do a variety of related clerical work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is a specialized clerical class. Incumbents in this class perform general clerical work and, in addition, are responsible for making decisions regarding the assignment and review of the work of two or more full time equivalent employees or using independent judgment in evaluating the performance of two full time equivalent employees.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. All duties listed are not necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

1. Receives work assignments and distributes to subordinates in accordance with workload and priorities; reviews work of subordinates for accuracy and completeness and for conformance to established style and format.

2. Assists subordinates in resolving problems encountered in their work; informs employees of new and revised procedures.

3. Periodically reviews clerical operating procedures and recommends appropriate changes.

4. Performs a wide variety of general clerical work which may include typing, use of alpha numeric keyboard stenography, machine transcription, filing, and acting as a receptionist; operates a variety of office machines; processes mail; prepares routine correspondence and reports.

5. Advises supervisor of workload or personnel problems.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Either I

The equivalent of one year of experience in the class of Clerk II or in an equivalent or higher level class in Alameda County classified service (Non-classified includes District Attorney’s Office, Hospital Authority, and the Consolidated Courts.)

Or II

The equivalent of two years of full time clerical experience.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed under the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

• Modern office practices and procedures including business correspondence, filing, and standard office equipment operation.

Ability to:

• Do clerical work involving independent judgment and requiring accuracy and speed.
• Identify and correct errors in English usage and grammar and arithmetical computations.
• Schedule, assign, and review the work of others.
• Understand and follow complex oral and written directions.
• Establish and maintain cooperative working relations with the public.
