DESCRIPTION
Under close supervision, performs manual and clerical work in the Alameda County Library. Also performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

Employees perform general manual and clerical tasks under supervision. The Library Page classification is distinguished from the higher classification of Library Clerk I in that the former is not focused on providing customer service.


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification.  However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level.  Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Organizes, shelves, and displays library materials according to the library’s written standards.
  2. Maintains proper order and neatness of collections; arranges materials, shelves, and fixtures for member browsing.
  3. Collects returned materials and materials left in the library.
  4. Receives and unpacks library material.
  5. Retrieves materials for use from non-public areas. 
  6. Checks in and sorts materials using a computer, automated materials handling system, or other equipment.
  7. Answers members’ basic location questions for material and services and refers members to appropriate staff for more complex questions or service needs.
  8. Directs members to library self-service options such as self-checkout machines, catalog stations, and kiosks. 
  9. Assists in setup and takedown of library meeting spaces. 



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Experience:

Possession of the following knowledge and abilities listed below.

Special Requirements:

Must be 16 years of age by examination closing date.

Push carts full of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs.

Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings and weekends.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

Knowledge of:

  • Numerical and alphabetical filing systems.
Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers.
  • Learn library procedures.
  • Learn to sort and shelve library materials accurately.
  • Follow written and oral instructions.
  • Use the common functions of a computer in an office environment.
  • Move large amounts of books from shelves, floors, bins, and carts.
  • Pay attention to detail.
