DESCRIPTION
This flexibly staffed classification series specification describes the entry-level classification in the Library Clerk series. Under supervision, provides customer service and performs various clerical and related duties in the Alameda County Library (Library).

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES

This is the entry-level classification in the Library Clerk flex series located in the Library. The employees work exclusively in the Library, providing customer service and performing more varied and complex clerical tasks under close supervision from a supervisor or manager. Employees in the Library Clerk I classification are expected to learn the job and develop the necessary knowledge and abilities for progression to flexibly promote to the higher classification of Library Clerk II after the completion of 975 hours (equivalent to six (6) months of full-time experience).


EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Each employee in the classification does not necessarily perform all duties listed.

  1. Provides account-focused customer service to library members, including issuing library cards, updating account information, checking out material, and maintaining the privacy and confidentiality of library member records.
  2. Investigates and resolves questions and concerns related to member accounts.
  3. Handles financial transactions in compliance with library procedure.
  4. Provides directional assistance and basic information about routine library services through webform, email, phone calls, or in-person. Refers non-routine questions to appropriate co-workers.
  5. Sorts, packs, unpacks, labels, and routes materials to and from other locations. 
  6. Checks in and sort materials using a computer, automated materials handling system, or other equipment.
  7. Organizes, shelves, and displays library materials according to the library’s written standards.
  8. Processes library materials and updates their status in library software.
  9. Performs routine clerical tasks, such as data entry and supply ordering. 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EITHER I
Experience:

The equivalent of six (6) months of full-time experience as a Library Page in the Alameda County classified service. 

OR II
Experience:

The equivalent of six (6) months of full-time experience in clerical or customer service work. 

Special Requirement:

Push carts of heavy books and lift up to 35 lbs.

Employees in this classification may be required to work evenings and weekends.

NOTE: The Civil Service Commission may modify the above Minimum Qualifications in the announcement of an examination.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
NOTE: The level and scope of the following knowledge and abilities are related to duties listed in the “Examples of Duties” section of this specification.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic command of the English language.
  • Numerical and alphabetical filing systems.
  • Alpha-numeric keyboards.
Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public and co-workers.
  • Communicate effectively with the public in person, online, in writing, and on the phone.
  • Learn library procedures, including checkout of materials, registration of members, processing of materials and supplies.
  • Process and handle library materials.
  • Learn to sort and shelve library materials accurately.
  • Follow written and oral instructions. 
  • Type accurately.
  • Use the common functions of a computer in an office environment. 
  • Problem-solve.
  • Exercise interpersonal sensitivity while working with individuals of diverse backgrounds.
