Dinosaur State Park will be hiring 1-2 Environmental Protection (EP) Seasonal Resource Assistants for winter 2018. These specific EP Seasonal Resource Assistants will provide support in a naturalist environment. The primary duty of these positions is to assist with guided programs for school groups and informal programs for family groups including nature walks, track talks and animal demonstrations.

Other duties include working the front desk, answering the phone, taking questions from the public and assisting with reports. These individuals may write articles for the Friends newsletter, create temporary displays and care for a small animal collection of reptiles. 

Selected candidates must be at least 18 years of age. Pay rates vary from $10.10 to $12 per hour depending on education and experience.  There are no benefits or paid holidays.  Hours per week are 9:00 to 4:30 pm.  Weekly hours will range from 21-35 per week.   Anticipated Length of Positions:  January 1 – August 31, 2018. The position does require working some holidays and weekends. We are looking for individuals who can continue working through the summer.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and at the Connecticut Agricultural Experiment Station as a limited duration employee, performs one or more of a variety of tasks and assigned duties of a seasonal nature.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Loads and unloads supplies; collects and disposes of waste material; assists employees of higher grade; plants, transplants, cuts or trims trees; drives a motor vehicle or other power equipment; maintains campsites and grounds; assists in the maintenance of farm plots; performs first aid duties; performs landscaping and snow removal duties; sells tickets and collects money; performs fire fighting duties; works as a deckhand on a boat; acts as a special patrol person or watch person; works as a seasonal supervisor of a recreational unit; performs a full range of lifeguard services at agency swimming areas; performs technical duties in connection with a pollution control program; performs duties under the direction of a research assistant in the field or laboratory; assists in fish culture and stocking activities; assists in conducting surveys and experiments in the field and forests; performs a variety of entry level clerical duties; performs lower level/general maintenance duties; performs related duties as required.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in these classes who are assigned as patrol persons or supervisors of small recreational units will perform emergency first aid as needed and will be required to obtain and retain a Basic First Aid Certificate.

2. Incumbents in these classes may be required for certain positions to meet any of the following:

a. Proof of possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator license.

b. Possession of a valid license to apply pesticides.

c. College training in a specific field.

d. Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification may be required by specific State facilities.

3. Incumbents performing patrol officer functions must currently possess Police Officer Standard Training (POST) certification or be eligible for POST recertification without completing the Basic Training program again (i.e. must be current or retired within two (2) years of last POST certified required employment) or Connecticut State Police (CSP) Academy certification (must be current or retired within two (2) years of last CSP certified required employment). Must pass a seasonal patroller training course as approved by the Connecticut State Police.

4. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must have and retain an American Red Cross (ARC) Lifeguarding Certification (includes CPR for the Professional Rescuer and Basic First Aid). An EMT or MRT certification may be substituted for the CPR and First Aid requirements.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

1. Incumbents in this class must possess and maintain adequate physical strength and stamina to perform the duties of the class.

2. Incumbents performing lifeguard services must be able to demonstrate American Red Cross (ARC) waterfront lifeguarding swimming skills.
