Introduction

The goal of the City of Charlotte's General Services Department is to guide agencies through innovative and efficient deployment of resources to meet their missions and fulfill the needs of the City in a rapidly evolving and complex environment. Summary

The Fleet Management Division is seeking a Shift Leader to lead a team of highly skilled heavy equipment technicians at our General Commerce shop. This position completes repairs by following standard procedures, replacing parts and equipment, testing repairs, and documenting all repairs in a fleet management information system. Supervises technicians by reviewing work completed, training technicians, and assisting with special projects.  Must have demonstrated leadership and supervisory qualities in overseeing the workflow of repair, and maintenance in a fleet environment; a thorough understanding of Fleet operations. In addition, this position is responsible for scheduling daily work assignments, coordinating recall, warranty, and maintenance work with local vendors; and communicating repair status to customers. This is a second shift position.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provides oversight and guidance to employees engaged in the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment including but not limited to: refuse trucks, construction equipment, street sweepers, dump trucks, and other specialized municipal equipment.  
  • Prioritize work assignments based on customer needs and fleet availability.
  • Communicate progress and challenges related to daily workload goals to shop leadership
  • Works with City vendors, OE manufacturers, Fleet customers, and Fleet Management to resolve any issues related to fleet performance and function.
  • Coordinates fleet repairs and scheduled maintenance between Fleet Management shops and City vendors.
  • Communicates process changes, training opportunities, and new initiatives to related staff. 
  • Assists in the development and implementation of process and procedures to enhance service levels and equipment uptime. 
  • Maintains a safe work environment for all assigned personnel. 

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Ability to clearly communicate with a diverse group of technicians, vendors, and staff.
  • Experience performing journeyman level diagnostic and repair work on all types of gas- and diesel-powered heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of the methods, tools, and materials used in maintaining and repairing all types of gas- and diesel-powered heavy trucks and equipment.
  • Knowledge of Fleet Management Information Systems.
  • Works well without direct supervision.
  • Knowledge of the occupational hazards & safety precautions of the trade. 
  • Ability to lead shop personnel to achieve desired goals.
  • Ability to resolve customer complaints related to vehicle repairs and maintenance.
  • Follow oral & written instructions.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally & in writing.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information to technicians and staff.
  • Must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license with the ability to obtain a Class A CDL within 180 days of hire.
  • Must possess or have the ability to obtain a North Carolina State Inspectors license within 180 days of hire.
  • Conflict management and resolution with staff, customers, and City vendors. 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office products including Excel, Word and PowerPoint.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with employees, vendors, and customers.

Preferred Qualification

  • Degree or certification from an accredited technical school or college 
  • Manufacturer training certification recognized by ASE, or relevant ASE certifications 
  • At least five years of experience related to heavy truck and diesel engine repair
  • At least three years of experience leading a team of people  

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School diploma/GED with five (5) years of relevant work experience or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience that provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the essential job duties

Salary

  • $27.46 - $34.32/hour Commensurate with Experience
