Function

This position maintains, upgrades, and troubleshoots plant electrical problems.

Summary

Work involves performing maintenance, upgrades, installation, and troubleshooting of electrical components and equipment that pertain to the City's water treatment processes, structures, and assets; repairing, maintaining, or replacing electrical equipment/components (breakers, starters, transformers); maintaining, connecting, and disconnecting electrical motors up to 480v; inspecting electrical instrumentation and performing minor repairs.  This position determines health life of critical electrical equipment and instruments and provides solutions to pending and/or post electrical component failures.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains the electrical aspects of equipment critical to operations 
Conducts preventative maintenance activities by inspecting motors, pumps, fans, and electrical distribution equipment regularly; cleaning, checking, and tightening connections in electrical equipment; and using a thermal testing device, and vibration monitor.  
Troubleshoots and diagnoses electrical malfunctions.
Repairs, maintains, or replaces electrical equipment and/or components such as breakers, starters, transformers, small motors up to 5hp.  
Analyzes the mechanical and electrical condition of motors.
Installs and/or replaces conductors as necessary.
Must be able to properly install various forms of conduit, such as PVC-Coated, Rigid Galvanized Conduit, Rigid Aluminum Conduit, PVC-Schedule 40
Disconnects electrical connections on electrical equipment as necessary for maintenance, repair, replacement. 
Maintains facility lighting.
Maintains UPS batteries, changing as required 
Makes additions, extensions, and or alterations in electrical systems by modifying wiring and hardware as directed by supervisor.
Inspects electrical instrumentation (for example, PowerLogic, SEL power meters & relays and analog current and voltage meters associated with our equipment) and performs minor repairs
Performs other related job duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of electrical circuits, and ability to read electrical schematics and electrical construction diagrams. 
Knowledge of electrical repair tools and devices. 
Knowledge of electronic instrumentation.  
Skill in using electrical repair tools and devices.
Ability to obtain a City driving authorization.  

Preferred Qualification

Desires a valid journeyman’s card/license for Mecklenburg County or a state electrical contractor’s license.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
Technical school education or associate degree in electrical field from an accredited school.  
Five (5) years of related work experience.

Licenses, Certifications or Registrations: 
Requires valid driver’s license.
Desires a valid journeyman’s card/license for Mecklenburg County or a state electrical contractor’s license.

Physical Requirements:
This position requires applying 30 pounds of force frequently and exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally to move objects. This position requires the physical abilities of: balancing, climbing, crouching, feeling, grasping, handling, perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels, distinguishing among sounds, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity in data/color/observations/equipment/inspections, and walking.
 
Work Environment:
Work is performed in an environment that may periodically have unpredicted requirements or demands.  Requires working on-call as scheduled.

Conditions of Employment
