Summary

The Diversion Specialist - County is assigned to the Community Services Bureau and reports to the Juvenile Diversion Program Manager. The Diversion Specialist works with youth (“clients”) who have been referred to the diversion program instead of being charged with a first-time, misdemeanor offense by law enforcement agencies in Mecklenburg County.

Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Diversion Specialist’s duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Processing referrals assigned by the Program Manager
  • Scheduling and conducting client intake sessions
  • Assigning clients to the appropriate life skills program
  • Scheduling and monitoring life skills programs
  • Notifying referring officers when clients have been admitted, declined, or completed
  • Notifying School Resource Officers when school-based contacts are required
  • Conducting client exit interviews
  • Attending team meetings and other meetings as assigned
  • Attending weekend and evening family Life Skills sessions
  • Submitting weekly reports to Program Manager
  • Documenting all contact with clients
  • Collect and aggregate diversion program data
  • Submit monthly and weekly reports to the chain of command
  • Monitor clients for recidivism,
  • Prepare reports, and assist with other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Knowledge of ages and stages of youth development, community resources, and agencies.  Must be skilled in community outreach, project management, report preparation, time management, and computer proficiency.  Must have the ability to establish working relationships with other employees, volunteers, agency partners, and the public, to carry out assignments using their own initiative and general instructions, to communicate effectively, verbally, and in writing. 

Preferred Qualification

Must have prior experience with Juvenile Diversion.

Minimum Qualifications

High School Graduate or Equivalent and one year related work experience

OR

Associate's Degree

The City’s Background Check Policy requires background checks to be conducted on final internal or external candidate(s) applying for any position with the City of Charlotte. The type of information that will be collected as part of a background check includes, but is not limited to: reference checks, social security verification, education verification, criminal conviction record check, and, if applicable, a credit history check, sex offender registry and motor vehicle records check.

The checks must be consistent with the guidelines set forth by these laws requiring organizations to obtain a candidate’s written authorization before obtaining a criminal background report, motor vehicle records check or credit report; and to properly store and dispose of information derived from such reports.

Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test and physical examination. During the selection process, candidates may be asked to take a skills test, and/or participate in other assessments.
